Don’t believe the government lies. We’ve lost way more in corrupt government contracts, tax on stamp duty holidays, non dom tax dodges and large corporate class avoidance. Among many others. They are going to remove safety restrictions on wealthy bankers but demonize average people wanting a increase in pay to afford to feed and heat themselves and families (not quaff Champaign and drive bigger cars). But as usual the peasants come last , serfdom never went away! Rishi and co care only for themselves and the few they need ousting before the damage is too great to the people and the UK.
It isn’t as though the extra cost will be lost to the UK’s economy. People get paid more, they spend more. The government taxes transactions, so each time that money moves, a part of it goes back to the exchequer. It’s only really lost when people move it out of the country, and by and large it’s the wealthy who do that. Public sector workers aren’t generally wealthy.
The Tories just don’t want to pay people what they’re worth. They’ve always been a party for the rich, and that’s all they’re interested in.
How much of this could be raised by keeping the 1% national insurance rise ?
How bad would it be for the economy if they raised the tax threshold to say 15 to 20 grand before you start paying, but then increased it a few % on the high end?
So in effect everyone gets a bit more money but your ultra earners pick up that slack?
Paying key workers a fair wage might stop the brain drain. Why be a doctor, nurse, teacher etc here when you can be paid more for the same work or less somewhere else?
A lot. Especially if the Tory donors can’t take insane amounts out of the NHS through simply owning an agency that supplies all the staff.
The money is there, it is just not where it needs to be. It’s resting in the accounts of the super-rich, it is being wasted through government mismanagement of the nation’s finances, it is being spent on needless consultants from the Big Four firms. It would cost a lot, but we have a lot to spend and this is something worth investing in. If we bothered to focus on people over profits and greed then we would find the money in no time.
Why doesn’t Sunak dip into that 350 million a week that his tory brexit friends promised? Surely that will fund it?
Good job we have saved all that money from Brexit so that we can now put into the NHS!
It’s irrelevant how much it will cost. These pay rises are not not happening because we can’t afford them, but for purely ideological reasons and the insane demand that we “shrink the state”.
How much did the track and trace cost again? More than the £18bn now being said it would cost to give all public sector workers an 11% pay rise? Wasn’t it like £23bn?
The money is there. Give me my money. Honest money for an honest days work.
It’s not about costing the gvmnt anything, it’s about what they can make from it, and the answer to that is fuck all. So nothing more to it. Look at everything they have done, it’s all to line their pockets.
What a poor article from the Guardian.
They have not added in the obvious substantial costs on top of the 10%.
Ni and the 20% pension contributions whack these figures up extensively.
It’s nothing to do with the cost. Not right now.
The cost of staff increases will get passed on to you, through train fairs, postage, air fairs, increase in cost to transport goods effects everything.
This drives 10% inflation up to 15%. Next year all the Labour voters put a gun to the head of the public again and demand 15%.
Off we go again. Next year it’s 20%, then 50%. Then 90% inflation. Fun eh?
Unfortunately only the Tories really get it. Unions and Labour voters are so economically illiterate (just look at the rest of the posts here) that the rest of the country simply laughs at you.
Strike all you like. It’s not happening.
How much money have the Tories fleeced from the public to line their own pockets is a better title.
I wonder if it’ll be a similar amount to the money stolen during covid?
