Absolutely sick of this. Every time I go for a walk in Clontarf, there’s four signs leading up to the bridge saying to dismount, no one ever does. I’ve had bells rung at me to get out of the way too.

  1. Just for the record, I’m not just having a moan here, I’ve seen people in wheelchairs, on walkers, elderly walkers, people with young kids have to move because someone on a bike wants to get past. those signs are there for a reason, so everybody can enjoy the seafront, selfish pricks are making it harder for a lot of people.

  2. Just don’t get out of their way? If there’s literally a traffic sign that applies specifically to them, you have no requirement to move. I know its not going to solve the problem, but small victories…

  3. Look, you just don’t understand.

We all know cyclists are colourblind, crippled by their inability to recognize the difference between a “Red Light” and a “Green Light”

We should also weep for them now further, as they are unable to read too!

  4. Don’t get out of the way, walk in their way, get hit, claim them, they pay you money, they don’t make the same mistake again, i actively try to walk in front of cyclists trying to run red lights when I have a green pedestrian crossing only ever had one close call i wasn’t touched but the cyclist nearly fell

  5. The real problem is they allow cars across this bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists are in put in conflict over the tiny sliver of path that remains.

Between selfish parking and people blocking the lights it is a disaster.

  6. During 2020 I took my granny for a walk, we were crossing this bridge and stopped for a second. We turned around and were narrowly missed by a lycra bollox who just couldn’t wait for the traffic lights. Like my granny nearly walked into him just by virtue of turning around. They’re fucking assholes.

  7. Maybe .. just maybe .. they should fucking encourage cycling instead of driving?

I can see there are cars there. So why is it forbidden to fucking cycle? Really stupid.

  8. As a cyclist in a different city: I dismount unless its 4am and no one is around. The rule id follow is, it’s your fault if you hit the pedestrian, and they will suffer more. So don’t be a dick. If it’s not a shared path, dismount and walk.

  9. Aren’t there walkways on both sides of this road? Why not make one for pedestrians and the other side for bikes? Bit ridiculous that cars can just drive through and own the road and bikes have to dismount. Unpopular view but cars shouldn’t even be allowed on the island except for handicap spaces.

  10. Don’t know if it’s the same back home but here in the UK if anyone rings their fuckin bicycle hell at me on a footpath I don’t fuckin move. And as they get on the road I shout at them to ‘stay on it’.
I can’t stand people riding bikes where people are walking.

  11. I’ve been running in Dublin for years, and I’ve had my share of bad encounters with cyclists. However, I also understand that I tend to notice and remember the handful of bad cyclists, not the majority of good ones. In the case described here, the situation is similar to the M50 pedestrian overpass along the Royal Canal. The path narrows and cyclists are ordered to dismount. Almost nobody does. However, it’s only the tourists on rental bikes who charge into the section when pedestrians are there; almost all local cyclists I’ve seen are waiting till the bridge is empty. I’d actually attribute the OP’s problem to people who cycle so little they are unaware of the rules of the road and common courtesy.

  12. They need to reduce the space for cars. This bridge should not be making cars the priority.

Honestly it would make more sense to completely pedestrianise it and make cars go the long way round.

  13. It’s the same everywhere it has those signs around the country. Does my head in on the pedestrian only bridges in Dublin.

  14. Yeah this sub can veer on the cyclists side a little too much at times.

I was standing at the cross roads behind trinity (at the barbers on westlin row) and a cyclist literally broke a red light (green pedestrian light) and cycled the wrong way up a road and then shouted back at me and called me a prick for stepping out in front of him (I had headphones in and man was green).

Cyclists get it from cars, often unfairly, but they very often break the rules and have little care for pedestrians too. I think more should be done in terms of cycling infrastructure.

But I really hate how they’re always portrayed as victims on this sub.

  15. And people like this make it so everyone hates cyclists and don’t care if they almost run them over. Honestly if everyone could just do what they’re supposed to do the roads would be a lot safer.

  16. I see this so often on the metal bridge between the CHQ center on the north side and pearse St on the south. Littered with signs and nobody ever dismounts.

  17. Stupid signs. If I dismount and wheel my bike across the pedestrian section, I block the whole pedestrian section to oncoming pedestrians with my bike beside me. Either my bike, myself or the other pedestrian ends up on the road portion.

  18. Yeah but cyclists in this country go by their own rules. They dont give a f about pedestrians, they ignore pedestrian lights and will bulldoze their way through but if a car was to slightly get in their way they are super aggressive and quick to bang on the car roof. Fucking hypocrites.

  19. Ah now, sure cyclists don’t need rules. You can’t even be sure they understand what that sign means, maybe they think it’s no access without a bike

  20. I don’t see any food reason why there is a disnount sign there though. Should be able to be in the vehicular part (which is what I’ve always done the couple of times there).

Shouldn’t be cycling on the pedestrians part, just as pedestrians, joggers and dog walkers shouldn’t be on the clontarf cycle path

  21. I’m a cyclist over 30 years and these are the €unts that give us a bad name. They’re not actually cyclists, just €unts on bikes. Same as the electric scooter €unts.

  22. Out of curiosity, why would anyone dismount?

Yes there is a sign to dismount, but isn’t it more efficient due to little space not to dismount?

If I’m on the bike, I take 45cm in width from the street (width of the handlebar)

    People can easily pass.

If I did would dismount its 45cm+ 2/3 * body width.

Which is obvious more space taken from the street, making passing each other much harder.

    I don’t get the point.

  23. The sign implies no bikes allowed beyond that point. Better change the sign to a person walking with a bike.

Also it would help to put words stating clearly to “Dismount from bicycles when crossing the bridge.”

Lastly, install rail guards that will force people to weak in an “S” at either foot of the bridge. This will force cyclists to dismount.
