PLEASE BE KIND: This is my first attempt at trying to celebrate St. Lucy’s/Lucia’s Day and Lussi’s Night. See comments for details. Please no rude comments.

  1. I’m learning more about my ancestry and found some winter holidays my ancestors would have celebrated. I celebrated St. Nicholas Day (by filling my mom’s boots with goodies) and then St. Lucy’s/Lucia’s Day & Lussi’s night. I’m disabled (cannot stand/sit up long or exert myself too much without severe symptoms) so could not make the traditional pastries from scratch. So I made alternatives. I did use premade dough packages. I served my mom in bed at the hotel we’re staying in. I didn’t have a white gown, red sash, or candle crown. Some Swedish people were rude me because these are not traditional pastries. I’m just trying to feel better during a rough time in my life.

  2. Hmm, the Unpromted “please dont be rude” and “please be kind” tempts me to be alittle rude just on spite.. Just so you know, remarks like that can spawn the behaviour you dont want in people. Especially on the internet. If you just post it normaly without that. i think rudeness would be less likely than with it. Just a friendly warning.

Either way there is nothing to be rude about here. You made some delicious looking food and are having fun experiencing a tradition.

    Looks great! Hope you enjoy!

  3. Did you use saffron in the buns? 🙂 I tried making them myself for the first time last year. They tasted good but I made too many, I still have them in the freezer….
    They look great btw!

I haven’t seen that other cake before though. Where is that tradition from?

  4. Looks great!
They are not exactly traditional norwegian st. Lucia pastries, but from what i saw in your comments that would have been pretty hard for you to make. Still looks like a lovely celebration and i hope you get to try some proper luciaboller some day. They are awesome and i will be baking a big batch today.

  5. You cant post on reddit and unironically expect people to not be rude.

Lussekatt looks good but we dont usually frost/glace them.

  6. Probably shouldn’t tell people not to be rude on a subreddit. This is an anonymous form of social media, you shouldn’t post here if you are that sensitive.

Facebook is probably a better place if you just want praise.

That said, i hope you enjoyed making the buns and that they were delicious, but it seems like there is a missing ingredient since the buns don’t have that yellow color that we normally see in lussekatter in Norway.

  7. At least you are doing more than I am doing, which is exactly nothing. What is one supposed to do on this day?

  8. What’s the sauce on the crown bread? Some kind of orange chutney?

And the orange rolls look fine. Might try them since I love trying new recipes.

You mention your disabilities making it hard for you to do things like baking. Do you own a kitchen machine that kneads dough?( I have no idea what they’re called in English, but Google “eltemaskin” and you’ll see what I mean).

  9. I have no idea what’s on the left, but looks good, though a bit impractical to wear on your head. The other stuff looks legit, and I’m overall a bit jealous.

  10. The “lussekatter I recognize but what kinda cake is the “sponge-cake-looking” one? In Norway we usually or only have the “lussekatter” when celebrating St. Lucia day.
