Almost 20,000 young people were hospitalized in Switzerland in the pandemic year 2021 – for treatment of a mental illness.
Compared to 2020, more girls and young women in particular had to be hospitalized for mental health issues. This number increased by 26 percent. Between 2020 and 2021, the increase among 10- to 14-year-old girls was as high as 52 percent. With an increase of 6 percent, the increase in inpatient hospitalizations for these reasons was much lower among young men in this age group.
This is shown by an evaluation of the Federal Statistical Office. In this regard, it speaks of a quote **”unprecedented increase”**.
I would like to hear some opinions on why that might be.
I think we are failing as a society with the whole pursuit of happiness = individualism thing.
Self-this, self-that, but I feel that it makes it more and more difficult to connect meaningfully with people, and all that remains is a lonely loop of dopamine highs and lows.

There’s a lot more ease in seeking mental health help these days, which I think is a large factor. Also the increase being higher in girls than boys makes sense as it’s often easier for girls to open up about these issues whereas there is still the stigma of boys supposedly needing to be “tough”, hence fewer will seek help.
Women are more social than men and took a bigger hit on mental wellbeing due to lockdowns/wfh

I’d like to see comparison with other countries.
Well you locked people 2 years.
You did school from home wich is shit.
And you expect everyone to be fine /s
Doesnt surprise me one bit. I know everyone has an opinion about the lockdowns but the youth / younge adults were the ones who got the worst lot. And you know what? Nobody gave a fuck and they knew what they were doing to them.
I suffer from autism and social anxieity but the doctors simple refuse to let me get tested officially :/
Mental issues here still arent taken seriously. We’re still stuck in the 80ties
We basically sacrificed the wellbeing, freedom, social life and joy of the entire young generation to protect the physical health of the older people – whilst also heavily impacting their social life.
That is a decision, that the adults have made about the young, that the young shall sacrifice for the old.
It is an interesting phenomenon, because usually we make it the other way around and value the well being of the children higher than the wellbeing of old people.
To safe lifes, yes of course. But at what cost? Are we really in the right to take away childrens laughter and lock innocent children up for so long?
We didn’t ask them and we didn’t care about them at all. And now we, society and media, largely ignore the price we made them pay.
Every life counted – but not their lifes, not their well being.
Wrong! This says nothing about who suffers more from mental disorders, it just says who gets hospitalized more.
Just look the environment we built for them. Ugly, repetitive concrete blocks. Loveless, uninviting spaces.
Clinical, standardised flats. And why are all modern buildings in depressive colours?
And then you live in such terrible places 24/7 and wondering why your mind goes crazy?
Unfortunately a lot of health professionals here still have the very outdated opinion that mental health issues are just a bad attitude or a little feeling that you can make go away by “being positive.” When I was clinically depressed and suicidal, I shit you not the psychiatrists entire strategy was to talk about my dreams with me.

That really is a significant increase…
