Britain’s jobless crisis fuelled by benefits anomaly that encourages people to work just two days a week

  1. Yeah, if you model UC as a UBI with varying marginal rates of tax (essentially what it is), those earning on low wages have a disgustingly high rate.

Systemic issues. Either lighten the taper or don’t complain about underemployment

  2. As someone working full time despite having severe anxiety which impacts my health for £35K, people working two days a week getting more than me is utter bullshit

  3. Well it’s an anomaly so it wont last long. Also pay those actually working more. God knows they deserve/need it right now. Businesses, especially large ones need to offer incentive and it’s not a secret right now that compensation for peoples work/time is faltering. Time is your literal life stream on this planet. We’re supposed to work to live. If living to work still isnt paying for our basic necessities then what’s the point? To suffer? No thank you.

  4. The telegraph wants us all to work like robots! But this is the inequality of of society this stuff happens in London where rents is super high! This won’t be happening if there wasn’t a housing crisis! I guarantee you people would prefer to work and eventually own a house! But these days it’s nearly impossible! However the people who do work don’t even know get pay rises that matches inflation! We Brit’s are hard workers but the cost of living and the cost of index compared to other countries are getting worst and worst for working class and middle earners and what do you also get? Increase in age when you get state pension! And surviving and not living! We need motivation, hope but we need to look at it both angles even if your a lefty centrist or a righty!

  5. Too much given on the benefits end that they are then eager to take away when income starts being earned (which then gets taxed). Come on guys it’s not hard to design a system that avoids this. A universal basic income/negative income tax idea might be needed here.

  6. these figures would be much clearer if the “housing benefit” part of benefits was renamed “landlordism subsidy”.

  7. “Look, peasants, your neighbour is getting 2p more than you! They’re the ones responsible for your misery, not the fat cats that steal your money and hide it in tax heavens”

    And it works.
    Every damn time.

    Simpletons.

  8. Job Centres can sanction people on UC who don’t work as much as they can. Doubt they will take earning slightly less as an excuse.

  9. **LET’S CRUNCH THOSE NUMBERS!**

The number of UK households with kids is roughly 8 million

The percentage of the UK population who are unemployed is 4%

That gives you a total figure of 320,000 households

But only 17% of Britons work part-time – that gets you down to 50,000

And the odds of both partners in a couple with kids being unemployed but working part-time are so small I can’t even calculate a probability

Which leaves you with 17% of all the single-mum households **possibly** being unemployed and **possibly** working so little they get a boost of a few extra grand per annum

Which gets you down to **12,000** single mums **possibly** receiving a few grand more than they would if they sat on their arses and did nothing …

… **if** they know about this quirk in this system, and **if** they’re the sort of cartoon scroungers *Telegraph* readers imagine are living it up at their expense

**END THIS SCOURGE, WHICH IS BANKRUPTING BRITAIN, NOW!**

  10. “Never the tories. Never the tory government. Never the overpaid bankers or ceos. Never the tax avoiders. Always the benefit claimant’s.”

I’m sure the torygraph have this enshrined on every office wall in their building

  11. The systematic dismantling of Britain continues apace. People need to march on Downing Street and parliament and revolt while there’s something left to fight for. The Tories have plundered the complete fabric of society for 12 years and enough is enough.

  12. Lmao – it’s been like this for ages.

The same way people are discouraged from earning over 100k or 50k for child benefits.

It’s not rocket science to create a fair tax system… it’s been fucked for ages

  13. Can the Tories please make their mind up if unemployment is at a record low. Or there are too many unemployed and it’s gaming the system

  14. The job shortage is caused by employers not paying a living wage PERIOD. Not because of benefits, or unemployment, or lack of workers, it’s just the bullshit capitalist system crumbling. That’s why barristers, nurses, postal workers, teachers, bus drivers, paramedics, and civial servants HAVE ALL BEEN ON STRIKE.

“We can’t find anyone to work for us *sob sob*” While they pocket 100k a year and expect someone with a degree to work for minimum wage.
