
Medieval “Shame Masks” from Germany and Belgium, c.1550-1700: these masks were primarily used to punish women who were accused of arguing, eavesdropping, or talking too much; the mask would be locked around their head/face as they were paraded through town, often unable to speak [4096×6144]

The top mask is Belgian, believed to have been found when the Vilvoorde prison in Brussels was rebuilt in the 1770s. More info in the OP.
