Why doesn’t the UK government want us to know if ministers have taken gifts and freebies? | Chris Bryant

  1. How dare the peasants know about the price at which our MPs and Peers/Lords can be brought for!? It is reserved only for the Elite/Rich/Oligarchs. Know your place, peasant trash!

  2. I cannot express the utter disdain I have for every single member of this Tory government. I truly pray that they are out of power for the next decade or more. They are the rot stretching from root to stem of nearly all the issues our country faces. Not one single thing has improved under their tenure for the average member of the public

  3. In EVERY public sector job Ive had, we either were flat out not allowed to accept gifts, or had a policy where anything over a fiver in value had to be declared to professional standards.

This is disgraceful, and shows you exactly what this tory government is all about : corruption, bribery and vested interests.

  4. Civil servants aren’t allowed to accept much more than a cup of tea and a basic lunch. A potential supplier couldn’t even pay for travel and accommodation to visit them. Offers of more have to be declined and recorded. The same should apply to everyone in government, including MPs, Lords, and especially ministers.

  5. What a stupid question.

Obviously, they don’t want us to know that, because it makes their lives easier.

The real question is why the electorate is ok with it.

  6. At this point democracy exists only as an illusion. All we have done is swapped the Monarchy for a conglomerate of elites who only care about short term goals and shifting the blame

  7. I prefer the American method for Presidential gifts, where the gifts go to the state but the President can choose to buy it off the state for a fair price

  8. Social worker here. I have to declare any gifts, even a box of chocolates. I’m held to a higher standard of accountability than a govt minister.

  9. All Labour needs to do is say you’ll repeal every law they bring in backdated, like they want to with EU law. Say you’ll bring in a law to retrospectively publish gifts received.

  10. They all take gifts and enjoy hospitality. They all take the piss with expenses, as was revealed a few years ago. Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems and the SNP – all of them.

  11. They don’t think anyone should know because they think they’re above the law and scrutiny from the “oiks”, who should know their place.

Self-serving, entitled cunts that pretend to serve the interests of their constituents while secretly lining their own pockets or those of their sponsors.

    We’re practically a banana republic.

And some people vote for this rubbish because they’ve not a clue.

  12. Because they are corrupt, transparency has gone. Government needs reform. Swinging back and forth between labour and conservatives no longer works for the people.

  13. Damn bunch of crooks they are.

Every company I’ve worked for in the UK has specific laws against taking gifts and freebies. And it’s always a hard NO.

These laws usually live under the “Anti-Bribery and Corruption” heading …

    just saying…
