Sure that helps most Belgians, but above all it reduces taxes on the rich a lot. So you lose a lot in taxes for relatively little benefit to the group you aim to help (the lower and middle class). In other words, it is not targeted and very inefficient.
Instead, if you really care about helping the lower and middle class, you need to come up with a more targeted solution. That could be in the electricity bill (limited about at 6%, rest at 21%) but also outside the electricity bill (e.g. just give everyone X euros, either directly or through a tax cut/reduction in benefits), which has the added benefit of incentivising efficient electricity usage.

It makes sense that reducing the tax saves more for rich people than poor people, and gives wrong incentives. So it would cost the government a lot of money, to disappear largely in the pockets of rich people who are wasting power.
That would indeed be a stupid thing to implement. Of course, electricity should have always been taxed at 6%, but making that change now would be investing money into something that makes no sense at all.
So yeah, i don’t get what’s wrong with saying that. What am i missing?
