It depends, was the decision to cancel made by RyanAir or by the airport authority? It may have been taken out of their hands?
From that, they appear to be saying the icing conditions were insurmountable. You would need to establish that this wasn’t the reason and that in fact they hadn’t adequate equipment to de-ice.
That’s a bit vague – it could either be the airport itself was icing, or Ryanair themselves didn’t have a de-icer on standby. Deicing aircraft is the responsibility of the airline, not DAA. And if I’m not mistaken weather is an act of god.
They know that 80% of people will just go “meh… I tried guess I’ll forget about it.”
From what I know it’s Ryanairs responsibility to de-ice planes they have 3 machines and one was broken down so I’d challenge them on it.
Weather conditions are a get out of jail free card for EU261 unfortunately
It’s not the airport. It’s the airline.
Some airlines have de icing machines on standby in the winter so their flights aren’t delayed or have a very minor delay (15mins). Ryanair don’t and it’s part of why their flights are so cheap.
It says adverse weather conditions over the airport.
It says noting about not having de-icing equipment.
I’m afraid they are probably right here. Bad weather. Weather warnings. And the airport failed to or couldn’t make it safe to fly.
You’d get the same from every airline.
But maybe with a nicer letter
It doesn’t say they had no de-icing equipment. All commercial aircraft have anti-icing equipment for normal icing conditions that are encountered every day.
What it says is the icing conditions over the airport meant the plane could not take off into that weather. If it had taken off the onboard equipment would not have been able to overcome the icing, the wings would have lost lift and OP would have been smeared across the Dublin countryside.
I was on a plane that was delayed 4 hours in knock a couple of weeks ago because the de icer on the aircraft was broken, I got the 250€ compensation anyways
You won’t be able to claim compensation if the delay was caused by weather
Some flights did take off and some didn’t – which means it’s not the weather at fault here
If other planes from other airlines were able to take off in the adverse weather and not cancel flights from Dublin, then it’s not the airport. Meaning Ryanair were under prepared and are at fault
Your best bet would be to check departures during the time of your flight. If other airlines were flying normally at that time and it was only Ryanair that was delaying and cancelling their flights due to “weather”, you might have a valid argument that it was Ryanair’s failure to prepare for the weather conditions that was the true cause of the delay, not the weather itself. If other airlines were experiencing similar delays and no flights were taking off at all during that time, then Ryanair’s argument that it was the weather conditions to blame is probably valid and you wouldn’t be entitled to compensation.
If there was 50 planes from multiple airlines waiting to go and the DAA made the call to cancel the flights then its not Ryanairs fault. I’d say the DAA made the call.
You’ll need to find that information before you appeal.
Ryanair are responsible for deicing their planes. Ryanair are not responsible for delays/cancellations caused by deicing other airlines planes.
I was stuck on a plane for 7 hours before takeoff on the Friday when it had been -2 degrees overnight that and the DAA had cleared all the runways of any snow . All conditions had been forecast for a week at least. I haven’t heard back but I’m assuming I’ll get a similar email to you. -2 degrees overnight and some snow on the ground is not extreme weather conditions. Under EU261 that’s the only reason weather can make you not entitled to compensation. I will be challenging it
Aer lingus were delayed for 3 hours. Similar to Turkish Airlines. No airline was as affected as Ryanair.
So DAA is saying it’s outside of their control and the airlines are responsible and the airlines are saying it’s the DAA fault, so then who’s fault is it?🤔
Please keep us updated here.
I got the same email for a flight cancelled Friday night from Rome (aer lingus flight departed with less than 30 minutes delay).
Yea I’d push that further. Other airlines managed to cope. Other countries manage…
Just appeal it to the IAA. They police the airlines so that they can’t just reject compensation claims without actually not being liable. The process of appealing is no more painful than the first step of asking Ryanair for compensation, and you don’t have to provide any proof either way. The IAA will do the investigation and rule if it actually was beyond Ryanair’s control
Definitely appeal that. Other flights traveled so it’s not weather. If it’s deicing off the aircraft then that’s Ryanair’s problem. I’ve had 3 appeals with them in the past. Every time was a letter like that to start but each time I was successful in getting the correct compensation eventually. One time took a small claims court and a sheriff to call with them but I got sorted so keep going, gather lots of info, and best of luck.
This was 100% Ryanair’s fault. Due to a lack of preparation and one deicing truck breaking down.
Staff were warned and could have anti iced aircraft but didn’t.

I was told by Ryanair I was not entitled to the €250 compensation because I opted not to take their rerouted flight that would leave me stranded in Naples at 1am.
Trying to complain I got mazes of “you need to ring this number, email this account etc”. They’re hoping to wear you down so you just give up.
I went to flightright and they took the case to court for me. I just had to submit my documents. Took 4 months but I eventually got €250 in my account. Would really recommend. Fuck RyanAir.
I’m asking for compensation for the same day. One thing I thought was odd was that we were told over the PA that the flight was “canceled” – half an hour later I received an email from ryanair talking about my “delayed” flight.
Applying for a refund is quite tricky, the EU261 form doesn’t work, which a member of ryanairs staff said was due to my flight still being “open” and I need to wait until the return flight has occurred, very peculiar since I obviously can’t get my return flight and you can only select one flight at a time when looking for compensation..
I was delayed in Barcelona due to the same issue in Dublin airport. Was told it was the airlines responsibility to deice the plane so sent my compensation claim to Ryanair.
They declined with similar message so I went small claims on them for the craic and it’s easy to do online.
They responded with a 19 page solicitors letter saying they would see me in court. As a day’s pay was worth more I let it go. So they won but likely cost them a lot more than my hundred euro. Pyrrhic victory.
