  1. I watched the video of him swinging the ~~machete~~ massive knife around like a madman and find it mad people have turned this into a race issue. It appeared the Gardai tried to subdue him without lethal force first too.

I do wonder if they hadn’t shot him and if he had injured/killed someone with the machete, would the same people be complaining about the reaction of the guards?

  2. Regardless of the circumstances of this case, it’s good that the Gardaí are fully and thoroughly scrutinized when they are involved in someone’s death, justified or otherwise.

  3. It’ll be great to get the facts of the matter and leave no doubt about whether or not the gardai were right or wrong in the situation. If they are proven to have acted right it’ll hopefully silence the “police brutality brigade” who did their best to try and compare racial issues with policing in other countries with that of the modus operandi of the Gardaí.

  4. I’m by no means a fan of the guards but I don’t think they did anything at all wrong here

  5. The uproar of this was purely on
The wave of the George floyd incident. Lets be real if it was just another knofe welding scrote it’d be forgotten about the the weeks end. Unfortunate what happened but the gard had to make that call under life threatening conditions

  6. To the people criticising this being made into a race issue; Nkencho was shot in the back. The Guards weren’t in danger when they opened fire and they knew he was entering his family home. The family had pleaded with the Gardai to allow them to calm him

To my knowledge it is the first time the ARU have opened fire on someone when they were not at the time posing a threat and the first time they’ve opened fire on someone with their back turned. That it was a black Irish man has led to questions as to whether the ARU were less reluctant to open fire and acted differently to how they normally would have.

I have no issue with this being investigated and feel its a good thing to have the Guards scrutinised heavily when they decide to take a life.

  7. I really don’t think there was uproar. It’s easy to confuse noise with outrage – yes people responded, reposted and discussed the death, but the vast majority of people understood that there was no alternative and that the deceased did pose a viable threat.

I do not believe the Garda are racist and that racism in Gardaí dealings is this is a common issue in Ireland. I think most people agree with that also.

I do believe that the woke brigade were wrong on this one. I also believe most people criticised them and sided with the Garda in this instance. I do believe this is a positive thing, that we as a society were able to openly assess the situation and agree on the most common sense understanding of the situation, regardless of a natural inclination to blame the Gardaí for their behaviour, or play the race card as a victim.

Overall, I believe this is a positive thing, and I’m glad the Garda involved did not get vilified for this death. I’m sure they’re shook up enough. Every death is a tragedy, and this poor man is no different.

Maybe if mental health services had intervened sooner, this could have been avoided. I’m not aware of their procedures or how they would handle a person with these difficulties, so I cannot fairly comment.

Overall though, it appears that the situation was handled appropriately by authorities, and that our society accepted that, despite the obvious tragedy. Rest in peace young man, you’re sorely missed by friends and family. Hopefully we can avoid similar tragedies going forward.
