Nieuwe campagne spoort mensen aan na te denken voor ze dier in huis halen: “Geen zak chips die je voor feestavond uit het rek plukt”

  1. To be fair some sort of ‘vergunning’ or pet holders license wouldn’t be a bad idea. Do a little exam and stuff. It shouldn’t be hard or expensive, just take some time and effort to make people THINK about what they are getting into.

I’d argue the same would be nice for having kids but I’d probably get downvoted for that.

  2. Having a decent barrier (read: a cost) for people who want to adopt is paramount in combination with a proper interview to see which people are involved. Our VZW has placed +-125 dogs (and 5 cats) in 2021 of which only 2 came back (or were taken back after signs of bad treatment) which thankfully found a better home after that in a matter of a few weeks during which they were (re)-trained.

Any organization or private person just giving away puppies or kittens from free without any check on the people that adopt them are playing with fire.

  3. Voor dat soort mensen die huisdieren inderdaad “als hebbedingetje” zien of wat dan ook zou men nog een artikel moeten schrijven om duidelijk te maken dat ademen onder water niet zo goed is voor de longen en de ademhaling maar soit…

  4. I would also argue for a permanent blacklist for those who return animals for frivolous reasons. I get that sometimes an adoption doesn’t work out and it’s difficult to check actual reasons, but for instance everybody who got a pet at the start of the pandemic and returned it once they were expected back at the office should be barred of getting one again.

And don’t get me started on people who return their dog or cat because they also got a new baby.

  5. Fun fact: For reptiles (I have a turtle and a tortoise), you’re required to notify the municipality. When I did this, the ‘milieu-ambtenaar’ didn’t even know what I was talking about or how to register the notification.

Sadly, I just don’t think that our government cares much about pets beyond some fancy billboards / slogans.

  7. Doesn’t everybody think of themselves that it’s a ‘good’ decision to get a pet?

I mean, who actually passes by a shop and thinks ” oh nice this shop has a promo of ‘ buy 1, get free dog food’ so i’ll just buy one”??

  8. I often see people whine about the adoption fee for shelter cats or kittens… getting a cat for free somewhere and then getting it up to date with sterilization, vaccination and a chip is going to cost a whole fuckton more, but I guess they weren’t planning to bother with that anyway. All those shelter kittens have to come from somewhere, right?
