Wait, so the ambulance drivers are on strike and they want the police to stand in for them?
And who the fuck will stand in for the police? The postie’s?
Absolute fucking shit show of a government, have literally no fucking idea how the world works.
why would they? sure they can drive an ambulance, but I would not trust them with anything beyond basic first aid.
Also they have police jobs to be doing. What insanity is this?
No one ever expected them to??? They said it would be the army.
The way things are going, I bet you there are a number of police officers wishing they could go on strike.
Good. Most of them can’t even do their own job, let alone tasking them to save lives
In London at least, lots of police officers were trained to drive ambulances, and perform some of the more basic functions of a paramedic during the pandemic. The idea then was that it would be a sudden boost of staff to the ambulance service, allowing them to manage the increased demand during that period.
However, the officers that were trained up are still considered to be trained, and are still occasionally found driving ambulances to this day on an overtime basis. I’ve no doubt that ambulance service bosses have considered trying to get those officers that are trained to stand in in the place of ambulance staff to minimize the impact of the strike.
(Fun fact, there’s also a large cohort of police officers trained to work in the ambulance service control room, taking 999 calls and dispatching crews. These officers were specifically trained up to step in in the event of a strike. Policing is one of few professions where the workers cannot strike, so they get used as something of a backup pool of staff for other public services, much like the army)
Police are trained at basic first aid, but even ambulance technicians have a higher standard of training than your average police officer.
That’s not a criticism of the police, it’s a simple fact that their jobs are different. Police are trained to do things like apply pressure to bleeding whilst calling for the experts. They’re not trained in the use of the equipment that’s on board an ambulance or how to assess casualties etc. Likewise ambulance staff aren’t trained on various aspects of the law that police need to follow. I’m sure your average paramedic or ambulance driver knows little about the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. They’re very different jobs.
Even officers technically trained to drive an ambulance (as in, able to drive a C1 vehicle and authorised to use blue lights and sirens) aren’t trained in the other aspects of an ambulance driver’s job and couldn’t be trained effectively in time. You need more than a first aid certificate.
Just fuckin pay ambulance staff what they’re fuckin owed
I would recommend police to be trained up to be doctors as well, coz we are going to strike next
Can guess how that would go.
