‘Dig coal to save the climate’: the folly of Cumbria’s plans for a new coalmine

  1. Apparently the guardian thinks it’s better to rely on foreign powers for our industry. Surprising especially given recent events, almost like they have no idea what they’re talking about.

  2. When the alternatives are “investing in renewables, helping businesses reduce waste, developing Cumbria’s tourist industry” it’s not even remotely surprising the support this gets. I might be politically closer to the detractors but you can’t expect people to have faith in vague promises of jobs that we don’t even want.

  3. New Cumbria coal mine owned by private equity firm based in Cayman Islands. Explain to me again how the British taxpayer benefits from this.

Still it’s nice to be reassured that this venture will be carbon neutral (as long as no one actually burns the coal).

  4. 2022 the left are arguing against opening a new coal mine and the conservatives are all for it,
Somewhere Thatcher and Scargill are very confused

  5. It is coking coal not thermal coal. Coking coal is used to produce steel which can go into wind turbines and electric cars. Thermal coal goes into power stations. If the global economy needs to transition to green, then how is that achieved? Where do all the resources come from? We need millions of tonnes of copper, nickel, lithium and loads of other elements. Got to break some eggs to make an omelet

  6. That’s not possible because a lady in the 80’s said the UK had no more coal and all the mines had to close down?
