Honestly, getting sick of the demonisation of the union.
The government has been fucking them around for months, putting the same offer on the table that’s been rejected and trying to play chicken with the unions, spreading fake posts/tweets online demonising the unions.
Have they tried negociating properly and trying to end the strikes?
None of this makes Sunak or the government look good.
Yup. Whether or not this is literally true, it must be the line and what he is telling his members to expect. Governments are temporary things, always vulnerable to the next election. Any group of workers must create the unshakeable impression that they tend to outlast the government no matter what they do.
I said this at the start of the strikes and I stand by it – the Tories do not want a deal. They want the dispute prolonged for political reasons. Maybe it’s a conspiracy but they have been throwing things in there that there’s no way the union can agree to. That and forcing the rail operators to play hardball, when I believe an agreement could have been reached by now.
The Tories will do the bidding of their masters which is the wealthy elite that bankroll their party. In return their wealthy masters will run propaganda campaigns trying to get the british publis to hate foreigners / immigrants/ single mothers, whatever will anger the public into voting for them. This is why the papers etc. Are whipping up hatred against the strikers through newspaper articles and interviews. This is why all of the interviews and news are trying to demonize Mick Lynch, nurses, rail workers etc. And so few of them are trying to support the NHS and rail workers etc. I think that the public are not being had over this time and I pray that this is a turning point where the general public (who the Tories do not represent) finally stops listening to this rubbish and gets them out.
They don’t give a shit about the brand of the railways at the moments and covid is being used as an opportunity to see what can be restructured. The government are wagering that the staff on strike will lose heart when they see their reduced pay packet and post Xmas credit card bills.
The Tories want the strikes prolonged so they can use it as a pretext to legislate to ban striking in the rail industry. Just like has happened in America . Then they will gauge the public’s response and use legislation banning striking as blue print to deal with other industry striking like healthcare workers, nurses, doctors, dock workers, public workers , ambulance workers the list goes on
>In my view they are deliberately doing this because they want the industrial action.
Yeah the tories will let them. They believe they will have the public turn against them sooner rather than later.
The rail unions are no different to any of the other unions going on strike over December, however they are the most vilified. We will see similar actions from other unions if their demands are not met; it is why Royal Mail announced more strikes over December. It might be incredibly annoying for those affected by the strikes but it is also fair to say that anyone would do the same in their situation. This just further demonstrates why unions are a good thing and that they should be more of a thing in the private sector.
I just got home from a bunch of train cancellations and it took over an hour longer than expected. Yet I still support RMT. Do not fall for the rhetoric that’s trying to be spun to focus blame on the union.
It’s going to be a lot of difficulties for people travelling for the next few weeks but this is the fault of the government.
>The reason we didn’t have strikes under the last Labour government was the last Labour government treated key workers with respect and got round the negotiating table,” she said.
The fire brigades had a massive series of strikes in 2002/3. As they wanted about an 18% pay rise. At a time when inflation was negligible, primarily to stop the Iraq War. As the Army would have to cover their strikes instead of training for Iraq.
It’s simple, pay people enough to live off and they are happy. Literally every MP has no idea how others live cause they earn £80 odd grand a year base.
NHS and Ambulance workers need to get in on this. Country needs a cleansing, too many dumb boomers and their dumb indoctrinated children got us into this.
Is anyone else here loving these train strikes? I get to WFH and avoid the 2 days in the office.
My union (UCU) is supposedly talking about doing the same. Total and indefinite walkout in the New year. I don’t know how well it would be supported or how people will manage financially (no, we don’t get paid while we’re on strike). But it seems that’s the way it will have to be. Striking for a day here and a day there has got us nowhere.
People think it’s inconvenient with a few days of strike action across various industries every few weeks.
Now, if they’d just imagine how inconvenient it would be if we didn’t have them at all. Because that’s the direction we’re headed.
I would love to use the trains for my commute but the equivalent journey is already more expensive than diesel, wear&tear and depreciation on my car. We should be slashing ticket prices to drive up passenger numbers. We should be doing everything we can to run a more reliable service. These things would have commuters flocking to the railways and result in coffers overflowing to increase wages.
Demanding to increase costs before revenue seems to me to be an argument to destroy the business rather than generating a sustainable system.
I reckon Mick Lynch could fight his way through the house of commons. MP by MP and he would win.
Whatever the case I support the strikes and always will even if it means making my life a little less easy, these people deserve it.
Welp.. looks like we’re back to the seventies again folks. Strikes everywhere, massive inflation, people having to choose between starving and freezing, recession without an end in sight, threats of blackouts, no jobs to be found and the fucking rich laughing it up..
We had a Tory government back then too.
I’m quite enjoying these strikes- my wife has excuses to not go to the office every time they happen which makes me happy!
I hope they are indefinite! Lots of people in positions similar to ours are also saving a lot of money.
Good, solidarity to all striking this month.
I’m fucking sick of living in the UK (the worlds 6th biggest economy) and being bombarded with Conservative Party propaganda about how we’re a high skilled high wage economy whilst only the former is true. Companies have exploited workers for decades now so they can keep their shareholders dividends/profits and executive bonuses nice and juicy whilst we get the scraps from the table.
The middle and upper classes have engaged in an almost constant class war against the working classes for the past 40 years, it’s nice to see we’re all finally standing up to them and demanding real feasible change.
I’m with them. The Tories will turn us into slaves if we let them. If we don’t start standing up for ourselves soon we will lose everything.
I support the RMT, nurses, teachers, any and every hard up worker struggling to hear their homes and feed their families.
As much as I support strike action, the railways have lost a massive amount of customers and are only continuing to fuel negative sentiment with this. At this rate, the railway workers are rapidly putting themselves all out of jobs.
