  1. We Brits can’t afford heating at the moment. Why are we building warplanes when Granny is freezing?

It’s like the military industrial complex owns our government.

  2. We need to scrap HS2 and there’s no money for transport infrastructure in the north of England.

Also let’s build a new toy.

  3. Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.
    — US President Eisenhower, 1953.

  4. My concern is that this will be a colossal money pit. It is very positive that we are taking defence spending very seriously, working together with other like minded countries (although it is not clear why the US is excluded) and providing high tech jobs for the UK, but this kind of serious spending needs to have serious results.

  5. Nobody wants to invest in the military until the time comes that those military assets need to be used. Then it’s too late.

  6. Japanese technology coupled with Italian build quality., so these jets will be state of the art but will rust in 3 months

  7. The Italians will have a wine rack in the Cockpit, and the Japanese will have game controllers for when you’re sipping wine and want to shoot for fun.
