Frankly, that is a good example why the EU is good and important.
At this pace, Twitter is poised to become a pile of social media garbage.
Just a friendly reminder that twitter is a private company and it can do whatever it wants.
And that includes censuring legal speech.
Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences, guys!
At least, that is what I was told the last 8 years. Has anything changed in the meantime?
> “We’re very disturbed by the arbitrary suspension of accounts of journalists that we saw on Twitter,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric
We have reached a point in history where the UN petitions one man
So Elon is being a dick but it’s funny how some of the same people who said “it’s a private company, they can censor who they want” when it was about Trump and some other unsympathetic folks, suddenly are now all about that free speech absolutism. Including the EU, apparently.
Obviously there should be some more reasoning behind bans, but it goes both here and in those other cases with unsympathetic people. And then I don’t think permabans should be a thing, at least for people (not bots/orgs).
What happend to “it’s a private company and they can ban/shadowban whoever they want, that’s not censorship”. You know, what the same EU, media and politicians said about social media operators banning people whoever they wanted prior. Just digital Plattform, you can move on. .
While it’s pretty shit that Elon runs Twitter into the ground, even faster then Myspace died, it’s so telling that now suddenly “it’s a private company and they can delete, block and ban who they want” doesn’t count when the right wing nut case billionaire controls it.
Free speech “absolutist” casually banning free speech he doesn’t like.
