She was always way too tapped up to do any actual sentence, this was always going to happen
Been following this case for a long time. So she has a suspended sentence in the UK…which she will never return to. So..she got away with it.
[deleted]
ridiculous. I’ve been following this case for a while, and this is such a total disrespect to Harry and his family. Eight months!
This really will be a tough sentence to swallow for the family of course, but also the public. It’s incredibly light and coupled with the notion she’ll never serve that time on account of her never setting foot here again, I can see a lot of anger quite rightly brewing about this.
Sad all round. I feel for his family.
The worst part of this is the arrogance from the US side. You can have one of your citizens go to someone else’s country and kill someone there, so you just make up some shit claiming that they’re a spy and not subject to the same laws as everyone else, and have them walk away scot free.
ITT: a lot of people thinking special privilege has been granted to a US spy causing death by careless driving in receiving a suspended sentence while not realising it is completely normal in the UK for this to be the case.
I think the only good of this is the high profile of this case may make someone else think twice before making the same stupid mistake.
I speak as someone who once drove down the wrong side of the road when on holiday in France. luckily for all involved I didn’t kill anyone.
Both the US government and the defendant have been hugely uncooperative with British justice throughout this saga.
Oh sure, she stopped at the scene of the accident, she’s pleaded guilty, she’s apologised remorsefully via videolink, etc etc, whatever.
But when has she ever deigned to make a voluntary appearance to the court ***in person*** despite the court being told numerous times there was no barrier to her attending in person voluntarily?
And do cooperative defendants flee the country in the first place whilst criminal proceedings are still ongoing?
By not agreeing to several extradition requests, across two different US presidents, the US has shown our government (and us, the British public) that it has no respect for the sanctity of our laws and our lives, only contempt.
This is the reality behind the “Special Relationship”, FYI.
Both her and the US government have failed to be cooperative ***when it mattered most***. A guilty plea accomplishes nothing when justice can’t actually be served. And that’s a very important point here. Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn didn’t necessarily just want a pointless guilty plea. They wanted justice for their son. They wanted her to get a proper sentence and a criminal record.
I am disgusted that a nation that purports to be our allies has such callous disregard for our laws, and does everything it can to protect criminals at the expense of the execution of lawful justice.
America is a rogue state, in this regard.
If I was in charge, one of my first moves now would be ban all UK-based foreign servicemen and women from driving on British roads, subject to them taking an additional, rigorous, enhanced driving test. I’d also lock down the bases where US service members in particular are based, as an expression of displeasure with the way this particular case has gone.
Sacoolas has gotten away scot-free, despite the guilty plea. That is the lesson to take away from this experience, and it’s a lesson many American government employees currently in Britain might well take onboard. You absolutely cannot trust that this whole farce won’t happen again; and if it was up to me I’d rather be assured in knowing that **MY** citizens would at least be safe from these redneck cowboys driving down the wrong side of the road.
The real losers in this story are Harry’s family. My final thoughts are with them.
There was no intent. Sacoolas made a mistake that tragically cost a young man his life. She was not impaired and immediately confessed. I don’t understand why so many think she should be jailed? Also, If the same thing happened to my wife during a visit to the US and I had the means to get her out of the country, I wouldn’t hesitate. If Sacoolas had stayed and gone to trial the media would have trashed her.
At the very least this sets a strong precedent to those with diplomatic immunity
Can’t believe the American govt was more interested to protect her. Really is the UK and US allies? Dunn’s best mates interview explains it all. He was clearly more upset than anyone else.
12 months ban of driving in a country she doesn’t drive in and 8 months suspended sentence to deter her committing further offences in a country she doesn’t live in or will even visit.
That’ll learn her! :/
And that’s justice in the U.K. – I’m honestly appalled at this sentencing and yet not shocked in the slightest. I’m sure the case was decided before it was heard.
firstly this seems like a punishment for the family for daring to pursue her through the courts, and secondly our government should tell the US to go fuck themselves regarding assange
no justice was served here.
her husband must be powerful, because she unbelievably claimed, and secured, diplomatic immunity but she wasn’t even employed. she got it from her husbands job.
anyway, it seems the political class have once again shown us that the legal system is only for the plebs, for the commoners.
It’s time we rebelled against this tyranny.
I frequently drive past the base and they now have multiple signs reminding people (Americans) to drive on the left hand side of the road
Relationships with American government is usually one way. They will demand your compliance but when they are at fault, then they aren’t held accountable.
The American government told her not to return so they couldn’t enforce any sort of judgement on her. Like Harry’s mum said, the UK is living under America’s thumb and we need to stop doing that. Harry’s parents seem happy enough with the result so I hope this helps them.
I’ve said it many times before, and I’ll say it again: if you ever want to kill someone, drive at them in your car. You will very rarely face jail time.
This is bullshit. She killed him with her reckless driving and she got away with it. Fuck her entirely.
Embarrassing what a pushover we are to the US. We shouldn’t hand over Assange.
The special relationship obviously refers to the way in which US citizens are carefully ushered through the UK legal system with impunity and indifference to their crimes. However it seems it’s not reciprocal. The US went all the way to the high court in an attempt to get Laurie Love (who had Asperger’s) in an attempt to get him charged with hacking the FBI and would’ve imprisoned him for life at a maximum security prison facility if they could.
I don’t think justice has been served here. She should have been made to attend court in person
.Should haven’t been a suspended sentence
I love the phrasing “Mistakingly put her car on a collision course” to avoid blame.
No she drove on the wrong fucking side of the road because she’s thick as shite. Probably texting but hey not my judgement.
On behalf of all Americans, I’ll say this: Anne Sacoolas is a disgrace.
Even though our country isn’t in the best place, Anne Sacoolas does NOT represent the US in any way, shape or form.
Please know we love you Brits. There are quite a few Americans who are on your side.
Damn, I didn’t know you could get away with murdering kids here! Another win for the justice system
I’m very late to the party but this is pathetic. A man died. She gets a year living without farting.
As a former Probation Officer this is gobsmacking. I worked with death by dangerous driving cases who were all under sentences of 10+ years!!
This is the sentence she would have gotten, so the running away was really pathetic in hindsight.
I think the real hero is Uncle Sam in this, spending 3 years protecting this woman from the consequences of her actions diplomatically whilst she went back to the US and probably told her friends how like, this is just like, *such* a nightmare you guys.
When the Great Train Robbery occurred we sent agents to abduct and return the criminals for trial. I don’t see why we just didn’t do the same thing here. Disgusting “sentence”.
What a joke, sacoolas needs to be locked up. Hopefully she has bad dreams about killing an innocent person for the rest of her life.
the thing that pissed me off most about this case – was that she fled to the usa – right after killing harry. THAT shows you what type of person she and her husband are. ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY.
If you want to kill someone in this country- do it with a car.
Didn’t even come to the UK for sentencing. Absolute joke. Didn’t have much choice but to give a suspended sentence because they couldn’t move her to prison even if they wanted to.

Blame the law, not the judges.
A woman in Scotland ran over her boyfriend, after an argument and got away with it, this is not the shock you think it is
