This won the architecture contest for the new Stadttheater development. It in the middle of a very beautiful part of town and looks extremely out of place (and add ugly to that). When I first saw this, I thought it was some april-fools joke but no, they are being serious about this. This is not just bad, this is absolutely horrible and you guys in Lucerne should do something about it.
Wow, what the shit! Meanwhile, authorities are implementing ridiculous restrictions for private renovations because everything needs to fit the general look of the city. Except here.
As chance would have it I’ve been somewhat active in city development politics in Lucerne for the last 10 years and unfortunately what we see here doesn’t come as a surprise.
The “Baudirektion” has never managed to develop any meaningful vision of architectural development for the city. Whenever some investor/landowner brings up an absurd idea it will be approved. Quite a few projects have been scrapped by the courts later and sometimes the judges articulate their “surprise” about the way the “Baudirektion” works (or rather: doesn’t work) quite clearly.
Of course in this case so far we are only seeing the results of the contest and most of the judges aren’t related to the Baudirektion. So it remains somewhat obscure why they’d chose that monstrosity. I don’t particularly like many of the [proposals that can be seen in the gallery here](https://www.zentralplus.ch/news/so-koennte-das-luzerner-theater-auch-aussehen-2503233/) but I think the one they chose certainly wasn’t the best in that (weak) competition.
But I think that they’d come up with something like this is also a consequence of the lack of respect that the city showed to it’s architectural image in the past decades.
I sure hope there will be some resizing at least.
Sorry, but we must go on the street against something like that!
It really doesn’t fit into the old city. If we don’t stop it now, we will have the city spoiled for generations!

That’s a very interesting texture on the facades, I wonder if it is supposed to me metallic or glass? Why I don’t understand is making these pointy roofs like little huts, doesn’t make much sense. The other projects are either better integrated or clearly different.
