Jack Lis: Mum of boy mauled to death by dog in Caerphilly slams ‘pitiful’ sentences

  1. Why do the most aggressive types of dogs attract the worst owners?

You either get the “Live, Laugh, Love” Brigade who insist they’re nanny dogs.

Or the wannabe thugs who get one because it looks hard.

Neither are capable of looking after it.

  2. Tougher sentencing doesn’t deter those who are going to do something like own a dangerous breed regardless of consequences.

What it does do, for a whole range of offences, is keep people behind bars for longer than necessary which leads to a number of problems including overcrowding.

Despite families wanting a greater sense of retribution, it has been proven time and again that rehabilitation is more beneficial to society than longer sentences.

  3. License and register all dogs. Heavily restricting breeding of dogs. If a dog attacks someone then charge the owner as if they carried out the attack themselves. Up to and including manslaughter or murder. Make it very clear that if your dog kills someone you should be going to prison and will never own a dog again.

  4. The only approach here is to start seriously punishing the owners of out of control dogs.

Licensing is all very well and good, but really all it’ll do is “keep the honest honest” and deter a few “on the fringes”. The types of people who own dogs and don’t look after them properly aren’t going to give a hoot about a license.

  5. So, the owner had only had the dog for 5 days when the attack happened. He’d got it “free” from Facebook because “it wasn’t good with other dogs”. The 2nd day of ownership appears to have been filled with filming it lunging at people and knocking kids off their scooters. It bit one owner and the other was videoed kicking and punching it. Nobody wanted to go near the thing.

What an utter mess. 4 years not nearly enough for wanton negligence leading to the death of an innocent child.

  6. We really need tougher laws on owning dogs.

Treat them like cars at this rate, want a dog? Go on a course and get a licence.
