The all time electricity usage for the nation peaked at about 6pm this evening.

  1. Wind is producing about 10% of demand all day. I’m surprised it’s even that high in frosty weather.

  2. Squeaky bum time for the grid. 7% imports and paying a fortune for it – over €2k per MWh

Wind on the floor as well with the frost.

  3. I’ve been keeping on eye on it the last few days, was thinking it might happen alright this week.

That figures not for the nation actually, but all Ireland.

  4. Last year Money point 2 was shut down permanently, huntstown and whitegate was out for repairs. Those 3 account for 2G nearly,so last year there was concern but this year both are back. Moneypoint 2 wasn’t financially viable to being back but that has been brought back regardless of cost, why I can’t find an exact email but it was for “security” mainly.

So there are extra capacity available to maybe 11GW is all are on and it’s perfect, but that never happens as they’re always breaking down, 70% on a good day. So the stations are not the issue. Eirgrids management could be,as it’s up to them to run and maintain ,as ESB are only electricity producers.

That being said, who tf has the immersion on.

  5. Wind won’t be any good in this weather…ooops…they need to build a new Ardnacrusha..just bigger…hydro power is under utilised. In Switzerland they even have micro hydro that reuses old mill runs and small drops..there is a fixation on wind and there are other options out there.

  6. What scares me most about this kind of stuff is the blackouts. I’ve medical devices that need electricity without it I’m a bit screwed. Any suggestions?

  7. Does this mean that the car from back to the future used more electricity than Ireland when it requires 1.21GW ?

  8. Just googled because I was interested, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine that’s in the news a lot lately is rated for 5700MW at maximum capacity. Not far off!

  9. Scrap the data centres. Were on the cusp of electricity amber alerts and they’re here consuming insane amounts of our energy and for what? To pay no tax?

“The figures show that data centres (14%) are now consuming more metered electricity than all of Ireland’s rural homes put together (12%). Eirgrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator, has said this could rise to 30% by 2030” – RTE

  10. I moved here from Canada 3 years ago and after doing the calculations, I realised that energy in Ireland is 7x the cost of energy there (and that calculation was done a year ago before the last major energy increase and with a 40% discount). I was never cold in Canada because we’d keep all our rooms at 20 degrees with forced air, but since moving to Ireland I’ve been freezing. I realised why after doing the calculations. People just can’t afford to heat a whole home 24/7 here. That’s why living rooms are absolutely roasting with the fireplace going, then places like the bathroom or bedrooms are so freezing cold. Simply being warm is a luxury I never thought I’d miss so much!
