SS: It’s friends and tragedy but not friends. It’s Ireland in fable land.
I’m posting here since, I want converation about this lovely movie. And want to hear your thoughts on what I say this cinema is really about. I was touched by the flim and down below you’ll read my thoughts on what is really is about and how that makes this movie even better.

Wikipedia says :
At the tail end of the [Irish Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Civil_War) in 1923, on the fictional [Irish isle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_isles) of Inisherin, [folk musician](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_traditional_music) Colm Doherty abruptly begins ignoring his long-time friend and drinking buddy Pádraic Súilleabháin. Pádraic, though nice and well liked by the islanders, is too dull for Colm, who wishes to spend the remainder of his life composing music and doing things for which he will be remembered. Pádraic’s life is destabilized by the loss of one of his few friends; as Pádraic grows increasingly distressed at the rejection, Colm becomes more resistant to his old friend’s attempts to speak to him. Colm eventually gives Pádraic an ultimatum: every time he bothers him or tries to talk with him, he will cut off one of his own left fingers with a pair of [sheep shears](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_shearing).

Deep down you watch this and yes that’s a summary of the plot. But hear me out. I shant go deep into history you all know well enough, 1922 and such. But the movie provides hints. It’s 1923 on Inisherin, and at the start of the movie and throughout they show plumes of smoke and talk about fighting on the mainland. In fictional Inisherin it’s a year behind. Colm and Pádraic our Ireland divided. One day one just up and says I’m done with out, your fine but I want more. That’s the story, told as individuals not north and south.
The analogies are deep without this flim. Jenny the donkey tells of sadnes and lose without referring to a son or daughter. The last part i’ll relate to is the final scence on the beach, were regardless of apoligies, both Colm and Pádraic realize that there is no going back due to both thier actions.

Thanks !

Great movie, probably didn’t deserve that many golden globe nominations but it’s fantastic for an Irish film.
To me it’s an allegory about the destructive/corrosive nature of ideological purity in general. Or just a break-up movie.
The metaphors are pretty heavy handed. There is literally a war going on on the other beach across from them and they are standing on the beach watching it. Not very subtle.
It is a very funny and well acted movie, but I would not compare it to anything deeper than that.
The biggest thing I took away from it was summed up in a tweet I saw which was ‘Men would rather cut off their own fingers than go to therapy’, which I thought was funny and would be interesting if that was explored more.
You should check out the movie Calvary if you enjoyed Banshees.
