It’s very important to learn and understand the history between the two countries, it’s horrible, deep and very unfortunate. The result of that learning however should not be unyielding hatred. Learn from the history but also understand those choices were made by different people from a different time. There should be progress to move toward a new time where relationships are rebuilt.
I will be honest I’d place my bet on the demons.

Greeks feel that way about Turkey

Seems like I’m in the minority but I was hoping England win. I watch the Premier League week in week out so know all the players. We need to move on from the past.
Having said that, there’s a good joke, true or not, that a bbc presenter is interviewing someone from, say, Roscommon, and they ask if there’s any situation at all where they’d support England. The fan thinks for a bit and says “well, maybe if they’re playing Galway.”
There’s something to be said for a local rivalry against your neighbours.
Irish national team being full of Brits: A-okay.
Brits winning a national game: Never okay.
I wanted England to win that match (so the mouthy cunting french were out) and then to lose in the semi’s to Morocco. Would have been a far funnier way to go.
Technically, it was the Normans who first invaded Ireland, and Normandy is now part of France. The Normans were loyal to the English King, also Norman. People have been brainwashed to think we were under English rule for 800 years but it is far more complex than that.

In fairness, this is easily the most likable England team I’ve ever known. Southgate seems like a genuinely great manager who cares for his players and is no tyrant. You also have the likes of Rashford who’s arguably done more for the UK’s poor than the Tory government has done for the past 15 years of power. Kane equally seems a nice guy with huge tallent, and as a team they seem far more humble and aware then England’s of the past.
That all said, still glad to see them go out.
Paddy here living in France , was backing France to win and now I’m backing Morocco, I’ll support anyone against England and anyone (cept England) against France , the French are too arrogant and are already talking about the third star on their jersey , the English are just the English, can’t believe any Paddy’s would support England over francet
This is what some English people don’t understand – there is literally *nothing* they could do to get Irish people to support them, *nothing*. So many of them are convinced that everybody wants them to lose because of their thuggish fans or obnoxious media or their self-absorbed chants of It’s Coming Home. When in reality Ireland would never support the Brits in sport *ever* no matter what they did. The English fans could be the most wholesome, loveable fans in the whole world. They could religiously clean up the stands after the matches just like the Japanese do. They could be buying all the other teams’ fans free beer. They could be the most progressive folk in the world and wave LGBT flags all over the place. It wouldn’t make a difference, Irish people will always be dead against their sports teams not because of their behaviour but because it’s England
