18th December 1989: Operation “Rose” took place. Hundreds of people killed or injured during the protests in Timisoara were taken in secret from the hospital by the Secret Services and transported to Bucharest where they were incinerated and their ashes thrown in the sewer

Also on this day, another well-remembered event happened: with Ceausescu’s orders to shoot in the protesters, they tried to run towards the cathedral to hide inside from the bullets, only to have the doors of the cathedral locked in their faces by the priests who were afraid of being tagged as collaborators in the revolution. Many people were shot dead on the stairs in front of the cathedral in Timisoara.
