Not an expert on Scottish Politics and Economics but can Scotland survive as its own country?
Would be interested to find out if it is reasonable or a pipe dream
Is anyone surprised? The ruling means the union isn’t fair, membership should be voluntary and Scotland should be able to hold a referendum.
I dont want to see Scotland go and I really dont think it will help them or the rest of the UK, but its completely understandable when they are being treated like this
Does Scotland have a lot of oil, would that be part of the plan?
The figures for each age group are pretty crazy imo
but they’re a bit higher than other recent surveys. Will be interesting to see if future polls stay as high.
Why do English people get so up in arms about Scottish independence? What do you guys care?
I feel that if the Scottish people want it, they should be allowed to have it. Personally I don’t think they’d be much better off but since we’ve spent the last 6 years bleating about sovereignty I think it’s disgustingly hypocritical that we don’t allow Scotland the same right to self determination.
A union with members that don’t want to be in it isn’t a union, it’s a prison.
The support/polls for independence can indicate all the rises they want – however as they are not going to be given another referendum anytime soon, it’s all moot. They will not be permitted to leave the Union.
This ruling was a win win for the SNP. And this information isn’t even slightly a surprise.
Agreeing that a country can make its own decision on its independence – excellent.
Telling a country they can’t make their own choices after being undemocratically dragged from the EU. When one of the main “vote no” arguments that anti independence made was loosing EU status… And upheld by the overwhelming Scottish no vote on Brexit… What the fuck else was going to happen?
As a Brit, I understand why Scotland wants independence, though I don’t think they should go through with it. I believe Scotland and the rest of the UK are better together, however we need a change in leadership soon or our union falls apart.
I believe Scotland needs to be treated better, that goes for Wales and Northern Ireland too, furthermore I think if effective change doesn’t happen, we will kill any chance of future relationships with our neighbours.
As someone who’s falling out of love with the UK, but still wants it to survive and thrive, I believe it’s time for a government shake up and I believe it’s time to admit when we’ve been wrong. Westminster should not be ruling the lives of those in Scotland or anyone else for that matter, unless they’re willing to listen to the people and treat those people with respect.
I hope this doesn’t come off as disrespectful or pompous, but I really like working with our neighbours and I think it would be devastating to lose that relationship.
I was the one laughing off my mums statement of “when Scotland becomes independent”. For context my parents are pretty anti-independence and I suspect my Dad is a Tory voter at heart. The Tories have to have really shit the bed for my parents to be so confident of an Indy Scotland.
Wonder how it would look without brexit/ tories. It’s a shame as I think we’re better together but you can hardly blame Scotland for being pissed off.
So wait a few more years, let the nay sayers die off, demand a referendum….
This makes me sad 😞
As an English person, I don’t relate to being English. I identify as British. The reason being that the Union of the four nations makes us better than we are individually. I’m proud to be from the UK, less so from England. The loss of Scotland would be a tremendous blow.
Tell someone they can’t do something for no good reasons and they’ll want to do it more.
Good luck lads. Can I come and live there with my family when you get independence? 🥺
I hope they do it. Labour may get in power for a little while but we will always go back to the tories.
Good, I really hope they get there independence. This Government are hypocrites, ie they are against Putin over Ukraine, but won’t let Scotland have there say on independence, they are against China, over Hong Kong & Taiwan, but won’t let Scotland have there say on independence. I don’t go along with the Supreme Court, as they was probably directed by the government and the Crown to refuse them there say. I’m half Scottish and born and live in England and believe in democracy, but this government and Crown does not.
So Brexit was an awful idea, and Scotxit isn’t… because what?
I’m happy for you all to vote for independence and go, but I can’t believe how many of you have drunk the same Brexity coolaid.
I can see this becoming a more and more heated topic. How long until people hit the streets? How long until it gets violent? Troubles 2.0? Maybe it might not be conceivable today, but if things become more tense between Westminster and Holyrood, this is very possible.
Well yeah. It would be easier to list who **didn’t** call this.
As someone very proud of the Union, my hope is that Scotland eventually settles into a Quebec-like place within Great Britain: saber-rattling for independence, but always acceptably placated with greater autonomy. There’s no way that Scotland will do better outside of the Union than inside of it – that’s precisely the same error behind Brexit.
The legacy of the Tory Party will be the eventual dissolution of the UK.
The annoying thing is that the Tory party will blame everyone but themselves and appear genuinely surprised when our 300+ year union lies in ruin.
Scotland will once again be a free nation. The only question is how long until it is.
What a sad day it will be when Scotland finally go and what a pitiful shadow of our former might our little island will be. Absolutely tragic the way this country has gone, and no one with the power has ever had enough spine to prevent it.
