I work in a care sector and one dementia home I went to had a roof converted with beds and filled with Philippines who paid a huge chunk of their wages to be on site 24/7 with little rights and scant respect.
So these Ghanaian nurses will be paid what they earn in their own country and the Ghanaian govt pickets the £1000?
If that’s the case that’s disgusting slave labour subverting uk employment laws on wages so their paid next to nothing as the uk is not a cheap place to live..

The proposed scheme is for nurses to come and work in the UK on three year contracts, and then return home.
The nurses get paid in the UK (obviously) and Ghana gets paid for sending them over.
Ghana already has a similar scheme set up with Barbados.
Ghana actually has a surplus of nurses (or at the very least more nurses than hospitals), which is part of what prompted the development of schemes like this.

What this doesn’t address is the cost of bringing them here and setting them up with housing and all the other orientation they need, my partner recently had a load of African nurses come over, their resettlement costs were over £50k each, more than the cost of a degree training for a British nurse.
the government would rather spend the money they would use to increase wages to import foreign labour, just to keep the wages low and make sure nurses dont unionise and get above their pay grade. This isnt a good thing and it isn’t “sticking it to brexiteers”.

Why can’t we just train our own nurses instead of pinching trained staff from other countries? If there’s a shortage of nurses in this country then make their training free and subsidise their accomodation.

It’s no wonder nurses in the U.K. are leaving in droves ( and students are dropping out.) Reading some of these comments from people who allegedly work in the NHS is depressing and shows a lack of knowledge about what nurses actually do. I’m sure the Ghanaian nurses will do a good job and best of luck to them.
Didn’t the London Ambulance Service already try this a few years back? Offering 3 year visa’s to paramedics from Australia and New Zealand to bolster numbers because the ambulance service was in dire straits. I worked alongside many of them, mostly young and it gave them an opportunity to travel Europe. It was supposed to give the LAS breathing space to sort their recruitment out. As always there was no foresight, the Aussies and Kiwis have mostly left and the LAS is in a worse position than it was before.
I can see exactly the same thing happening with this. Wallpapering over cracks. Just pay them a living wage and less staff would leave the profession.
Phew!! For a moment there it was almost looking like we were going to have start paying nurses properly.
What a shitty thing for us (the UK) to do. Ghana is apparently so desperate for cash that they’ll give skilled workers away for practically nothing and we’re enabling that.
If only there were people in the UK we could train as nurses instead…
