Due to the proximity and thus close relations between Bratislava and Vienna, the Slovakian capital is marked as a stop on the Greater Vienna Region public railway map. Those two cities are the closest two capitals in Europe being just 55 kilometers (34 miles) apart.

  1. Tallinn and Helsinki are the second closest in Europe with 80 km. Too far across the gulf to be reasonable to depict them on the public transport map, but the ferry line connecting them is the busiest international ferry line in the world with about 9 million passengers in the pre-Covid years.

  2. Well, after 1516, the city was mostly dominated by the Habsburgs, had a significant ethnic German population, and the city’s name until 1919 reflected that: Pressburg.

So, historically, Vienna and Bratislava have been fairly close not just in terms of distance.

  3. Fun fact (that I learned from a YouTube video): Of the two routes to Bratislava shown, the one going to Bratislava Hauptbahnhof isn’t electrified for part of the way and as a result the train equipment used on it isn’t as modern. The route going around south to Bratislava Petrzalka is fully electrified and thus sees more modern equipment used on it.

  4. In my 3 day trip to vienna a week ago when i saw the image i immediately realized it was the vienna u bahn. Probably the most efficient one i have been to so far
