Yay, another tv license rant post.
Just got a letter in post saying TV inspector visited my premises and found me with a unlicensed Tv set and now have 10 days to pay the annual 160.
Have blinds closed and haven’t been answering the door to the fks. Yet this magical tv license inspector found I had a tv set without me answering the door, entering or seeing inside my house.
I don’t even use the shitty aerial, skydigital or any other crap service… Just the internet.
Honestly just want to disable aerial ports on tvs now so I can shout my head off at the fkers for not actually checking. Does anyone have any experience taking out the aerial ports and if it’s worth doing?
The only thing that worries me is when I try to get rid of or resell the tv it would be wasted.
Probably better off paying the 160 a year for a service I do not use 🤬
Edit*
This was the letter

Pretty sure you’d still have to pay the license even if you did that because it could be repaired.

you need to get rid of the tv
It’s a con, they have no authority, they’re gambling on you freaking out and paying it. I haven’t watched tv in 4 years (why would I, it’s crap with ads) and I still get this shite. Nothing comes of it.
Respond to the letter and write you say “x, y, z” please provide evidence upon which you would rely in court that establishes I have a TV. If I do not have written confirmation of such evidence within x days I will conclude no such evidence exists. Further conspondance on this matter will consist use harassment under X Act.
Don’t state you have or haven’t they have to prove you have.
Who was the letter addressed too ?
They assume every residence has a TV (which is likely true) and therefore issued you the payment request.
Yes the inspectors are arseholes and RTE is shite but the sad reality is the TV licence is just another tax we have to live with.
I love paying to own a box that’s not even connected to a cable or streaming service just so Ryan T can buy coke
They’d levy a laptop license if the c*nts thought they could get away with it
They don’t have your name. Safe to ignore.
I desoldered aerial ports on my tv too and grinded down the traces on the pcb.
They will still say that it can be repaired – which is basically saying that ANY screen out there can be ‘repaired’ by adding a signal-receiving PCB to it.
A TV on its own will not be able to capture any RTE signal, you need an aerial at a minimum (I’m not even sure if RTE has a non-digital signal any more).
One sat across the road from my house in a VW camper van with curtains. I noticed he went into the back and the curtains moved.
I wondered what he was doing and then noticed he had some headphones and a microphone.
He was pointing the microphone towards my house listening to see if I had the tv on.
He was using surveillance equipment so that’s how the sly bastards get you.
Until you get a court summons in your name it’s a fishing letter and can be ignored.
Though it’s one of the terms and conditions of living in Ireland.
Other terms and conditions would be the government providing safe housing for the citizens and offering a properly functioning health care system.
So I guess everyone is breaking the contract..
They’re probably bluffing, I sort the post out for the lady across the landing and she gets a reminder from the 6 counties licensing every few months. They’ve never called and I wouldn’t let them in anyway. I’m licensed always have been and we’ve no roof ariel.
I’ve soldered the coaxial ports back on on TV’s but very carefully opened the back of the TV, and I don’t like opening TV’s they still carry a current in the capacitors but they’re usually on the power board and covered. Yet still I hate doing it. To remove the coaxial connecter try using pointy nosed pliers and nip it out. A solid grip both sides one sharp pull should be enough to remove it from the RF board with the TV off. To replace it they cost a few euros but you will need a soldering iron more than likely and have to open the TV. You’re going to damage your own TV, no point so don’t worry. They’re bluffing.
Doesn’t mention your name on it anywhere. Straight in the bin.
Was the letter in your name. If not ignore it don’t open the door to them don’t give a name they can’t prosecute you without your details.
Does the letter give you the option of installments payments ? I pay mine every 3 months instead. It’s a bit handier
I was contacted by the tv license dept about a tv so i sold it and bought a projector for 450 euros which is still going strong 4 years later
tv license : 4 years x 160 = 640
projector and a pot of white paint for the wall = 470
It’s not in your name, ignore it
The party that says they’ll abolish the tv license tax will win by a landslide. Surprised it’s not been used as a platform yet.
Just pay it. Do you really expect RTE stars to go without this Christmas.
RTE – Respect The Establishment
I take a ridiculous amount of delight from not paying this ransom tax each and every year. Now on year 5 with no payments 😃
You couldn’t PAY ME to watch those clowns on RTE
Ignore that letter. It’s utter bollocks. Got one over a year ago and I ignored it. Nothing since. They don’t have your name on it either, so they can do fuck all. I haven’t paid the license in 27 years.
