I posted about how to check tyres with a euro, one of the comments said to look at the tread indicators on the tyre instead… looking at that pic the tyre indicators are still there but the tyre is fucked.
This is why it’s important to check the depth in the middle, this tyre has been overinflated and it’s worn right down the middle. An under-inflated tyre will wear on the edges.
Is their NCT in date? How in the hell did they pass?!
Maybe they don’t have any Euro coins?

I work in a tyre shop and that tyre is a lot better than some i’ve seen, there’s not even wire showing.
Obviously not saying this is a good tyre….just that there’s a lot more dangerous bastards out there.

I have the unfortunate job of cleaning up after car accidents, it’s a science of course because almost everything is evidence but the most important element is the tyre mark, or skid mark. You can tell the bald tyre from the new without even looking at the road because the bald tyre is usually scrap agin a wall or tree (not saying that can’t happen anyway). The tyre marks are the giveaway though because the bald tyre leaves fuck all behind on the road after a hard break, which means there was no grip and fuck all friction to pull what remained of the rubber off. I seen one accident a few years back and the tyres were as bald as anything I had seen before. Instead of coming to a stop at break they just slid off away and away, no sign or word from them since.
Did you leave a note to alert the driver to their shittiness and the danger it creates for you?

My Dad owns a garage and some of the stories he tells me of the state of yokes that come into him would scare you off driving. One fella that stands out was a an auld lad who’s brakes went months prior so was just using the clutch and his handbrake. My Dad said his handbrake was that worn out it was on the brink of snapping.

If that car is in a crash the first thing the assessor will check is the tyre condition. Those tyres will invalidate his policy. I’ve seen this before several times.
Not hard to believe at all. The cost to keep a car/van on the roads is ridiculous. Lately I’ve noticed far more people who don’t bother with tax or insurance either. Its getting crazy out there

Picked up a car from the Cork airport a few months back, first time on the other side of the car/road, but that wasn’t the problem — the flat tire within the first 20 minutes was.

Not really, I worked with a guy that had his ‘NCT’ set of tyres, then would swap them off again after. He only swap to a replacement set once his current ones were basically Slicks. Even then he would put on the ‘NCT’ tyres and use the brand news as his new ‘NCT’ set
Had a near miss myself recently on tyres. I’d class myself as good at checking them, but annual service was due so off to mechanic. Inside of rear tyres was as bald. Wife went to get them changed few weeks later (had to wait for payday), it was worse than expected, probably not far from a blowout. Won’t be making that mistake again
