Obvious things the Tory party will oppose, number 291 in an open-ended series.
wow , it must have taken the tippest toppest minds in business to work this out there’s no chance any ordinary folk could have figured this praise our lords of business for their savvy business minds!!
> The report sets out steps for the government to adopt that will eventually boost economic growth, starting with increasing funding for free hours of childcare and extending an offer of 30 hours to all three- and four-year-olds. Other steps include:
> – Extending 15 free hours to all two-year-olds, with eligibility beginning from the end of paid parental leave.
> – Increasing funded hours for two-year-olds and under two-year-olds.
> – Extending wraparound care from 8am to 6pm to more schools and offering a variety of after-school activities through term time.
Given statutory maternity pay in the U.K. is a measly £156 a week (which wouldn’t cover half my mortgage) after six weeks, that means funded hours need to begin pretty much from birth, not age two.
Even trying to survive on your £156 a week, this ends before the child turns one.
Possibly far earlier if you’ve stopped working before you’re full term!
What surprises me about this is that New Labour came in in the late 90’s promising that they’d invest in early-years childcare to help parents stay in work. All we need now is for Starmer to drop the anti-immigration rhetoric and start saying “Education Education Education!” and he’ll complete his transformation into Tony Blair.
Nooooooooooooo shiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Families are priced out. UK economic climate: ‘hahaha fuck you takes two people to afford a house and basic amenities now. Sucks, ohwell’
Also UK: ‘yeahhhhh we know you need two wages coming in and maternity is a year at a percentage of pay but …… We are going to charge you for child care so. Congrats? Probably cheaper for you to do it yourself **JOKE** now you can’t pay the mortgage ayyyy’
No shit Sherlock. Being able to return to work after having a kid and creating more nursery jobs would stimulate economic growth? Who would have known if you’d not said it?
If the Tory government sincerely gave a rats arse about economic growth, a shit tonne of the last decade or more would have played out very differently.
No shit Sherlock! I live in the pricey South and still paying more on childcare than mortgage every damn month, with the money I’ve been giving to the nursery I could have put down another deposit for a second property.
Just saying
Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I don’t agree with this.
I honestly believe that childcare should be something that is affordable in the system we live in. If it is not, then that suggests the system itself needs fixing. Making it come out of the avarage persons tax (regardless of if they have/want kids) seems like a bandaid that doesn’t resolve the issue in the long run.
We need a system where a household doesn’t need 2x fulltime wages just to simple exist – and even that’s becoming a struggle in some areas.
We need a system that allows people to have humane lives, and not just revolve around working for 80% of their existance. Perhaps at that point people will either have more time to look after their own children, or have the financial means to afford childcare.
I mean, at the moment people are struggling to even afford homes…….
When my wife went back to work, we looked at part time care. Only we couldn’t afford it, so my wife had to go back full time to cover the cost. When we qualified for free care, the nursery responded by hiking the prices four times in 12months. Ended up paying £800pcm
Of course.
But we can’t have that, because it would be socialist. It would treat children as humans, and not as a hobby of their parents. It would mean that we invest in the future of society, when the mantra is “there is no such thing as society”.
In short, it is not nearly evil enough.
These policies would allow poor people to escape the poverty trap, and can’t be allowed to happen. How will we be able to motivate poor people if they are able to feed themselves? /s
How does this keep the poor in line, no where does it mention starving poor children? Why would Tories be interested in implementing this policy? Is there a government contract for one of their mates in it?
Anyway, why can’t we all be more like Boris and avoid our unknown number of children while just being drunk all the time?
Fairly obvious. However, personally I would prefer if wages were sufficient enough for one parent to work and another to look after the child. With engough disposable income for them to save for a property.
You know the kind of economy those who now in charge benefited from.
Boost economic growth, boost population growth and boost future economic growth (evidence suggests the earlier we invest in children’s education the greater the returns). All round good idea… Which is why we won’t do it
No shit… but it won’t happen until the Tories are kicked out.
Nah fuck that, let’s just spend £50 million on an advertising campaing saying we’re all in this together or something.
This would literally change the lives of millions of working people. I know some families with childcare bills of £1750 a month, who don’t even live in an expensive party of the country. How can anyone afford to keep their houses and cars and other vital stuff maintained for 3 years when they are shelling out a small fortune every month just to keep their kids in nursery and go to work.
Suddenly freeing up this income would mean it gets reinvested back into the economy and the people.
With a baby due in the next few weeks, we’re preparing for a childcare cost that is more than our mortgage and bills per month.
Our system is not designed for new parents in the slightest. As a dad, I will only have 2 weeks to spend with my child before going back to work
Anyone who actually has to worry about this kind of thing or is even close to people that do could tell you in a heart beat. I had an ex who couldn’t work because it would be less money in her pocket at the end of the month.
Unfortunately no one in parliament will ever experience what it’s like to be forced out of work and onto benefits.
We had a combined pre-tax income of 48k a year when we had our first daughter ten years ago. 21,600 of it went on Childcare so that we could both go to work. What was left over had to cover a mortgage in West London, and all bills to heat and feed three people.
At the very least, take the childcare money out of people’s earnings pre-tax so we aren’t getting taxed twice. You’re taxing my earnings, then forcing me to pay 1800 a month for childcare so that I can even go to my job that you’re taxing me on.
I loathe this government. I fucking loathe it.
Needs to be properly funded, ie not just term time or only for half a day
Or you know maybe wages shouldnt be so low that both parents have to work in the first place
Yes but then that would be communism and therefore unpopular with the gibbering psychopaths who vote Tory every election.
I agree with this. The current system encourages women to leave the workforce.
We’ve just had our first child and my wife who is a teacher will be going back at most 3 days a week when maternity leave ends.
Admittedly she would like to spend as much time as possible with him until he’s at school but the current system just makes it an easy decision to either cut back on work or leave it altogether because of childcare costs. I’m sure a system with free childcare would encourage more mum’s back to work post maternity.
Come on we will have none of your tofu eating progressive thinking here. When the conservatives talk about growth what they mean is growth company profits, it is a different thing.
Breakfast and afterschool clubs are also a big expense for any parents wanting to work.
Can’t see the English Tories doing this.
It would confirm, once again, that the SNP is doing good things in Scotland.
But in the short term, that means less money in the billionaires’ filthy little pocketses. So that won’t be allowed to happen.
No shit. And free school meals for all would boost academic performance.
That’s proven time and time again, the problem is in the class war with the working class and poor Tory willingly DON’T do stuff beneficial for the country out orlf spite, superiority complex and their rich benefactors.
It would cost us more in childcare costs if my wife went back to work than if she stays home. It just seems horrifically broken.
As a conservative.
On one hand, I support the expansion of the existing system. If people want to work, we should be encouraging it.
On the other hand, I think we should be expanding child benefits and leave, so that parents can spend more time with their kids.
Reasons people can’t work.
1)Can’t afford childcare.
2)Too sick to work but a simple operation would fix the problem. Shame there’s a 10000 year wait!
The Conservatives have got what they wanted – a cruel, mean, dog-eat-dog UK.
No shit – childcare is painfully expensive and puts so many parents off of having more children/ having any children at all.
