We have a flight to catch in a few hours and are staying right next to Hafnarfjall mountain where the winds are strongest. Is it safe to drive in these conditions? We have a Subaru crossover SUV. Hope someone can answer as were wrestling with the decision now 🙏

  1. Please do not go outside or attempt to drive in these conditions, especially if you are familiar with severe weather like this. Conditions currently are already tough enough with all the snow and this kind of weather can be risky to drive in, locals even regularly avoid driving in this.

Regardless it’s likely a road you want to access will be shut down if you’re in the countryside due to something like this.

  2. Thank you for the response! We are in borgarnes. Did the drive to the city already today. Scary whiteout conditions but made it in one piece. I don’t know if things are worse overnight.

  3. Also I find it odd that all the roads appear to be open now while they were mostly closed on Saturday. Do they close them because of hazardous whether or they just need time to clear the roads of snow? Weather worse now than when the roads were closed

  4. Stay in and change your flight. It’s not worth being hurt. The road is probably going to be closed.

  5. Check road.is for the most reliable update info. If the road is red meaning closed definitely don’t do it. It’s closed for a reason.

  6. The winds can easily blow you off your lane and into the ditch. Plenty of roads are raised and with one lane each direction, either you get wind-pushed off the roads or into oncoming traffic. When you get out of the car, the wind can throw it into the car next to you or damage the hinges. If it’s not life or death, I would wait it out somewhere safe. Gangi þér vel.

  7. Welp, the group has decided to go. Hopefully you don’t end up reading about us in the papers. Maybe car loaded with luggage helps? They think the weather will only get worse the longer we wait

  8. Considering that the Reykjanesbraut road is closed you’re not going to get to any flight in Keflavik that is also probably going to be cancelled anyway.

  9. We drove it yesterday when the weather looked “fine” on veður.is and cars were literally turning around between Borgarnes and Akranes because the gust and visibility was so bad. We made it ok, worst thing was drivers who were scared literally stopping in gusts of snow blow with 0 visibility and like 30 cars behind them. So if yesterday was bad then today…

Also the road to the airport is now closed so you’ll end up getting stuck in Reykjavik

  10. We drove the southern coast during high winds and snow and it created a “white out”. Couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of you. Several cars flipped over on the side of the road and they had to be emergency rescued. We made it to shelter safely, but I wouldn’t recommend. (I’m from the Midwest and very experienced driving in snow).

  11. Do. Not. Drive. In. Those. Conditions. For. The. Love. Of. God.

Dunno why this is even a question.

  12. Would you mind taking a photo of and uploading the safety information package that came with you rental, I am genuinely curious as to what kind of support these companies are providing.

1777 is the Road Authority hotline by the way, they will give you current and accurate information.
