Puma tank failure is ‘heavy setback’ for Germany

  1. Ouch. I love watching tanks roll over orcs. Did they buy these from someone or make them? If bought, ask for a refund! XD

  2. Sort of worried about the quality of the new German warmachines in general. They seem to be overengineered just as they were in 1940s which gives them some advantage in certain combat situations but also means they are much more prone to breaking down. They had the same trend going on with their car industry which was releasing super overengineered ICE cars at a high cost but with very few benefits. As soon as mass production of electric cars started whose engine is incredibly simple compared to ICE, all that overengineered mess could not compete with them.

Now I wonder if the new Panther MBT is going to suffer from problems as well.

  3. During the maneuvers, “the operational readiness of 18 combat vehicles dropped to zero in a matter of days.” They are expected to be brought to full operational readiness again within 3-4 months, but even then “despite all the proper preparations, it will be a lottery,” wrote Ruprecht von Butler, commander of the 10th Armored Division. The failures in the Pumas are mainly electronic malfunctions. The Puma was supposed to be the “flagship project of the Bundeswehr.” The Defense Ministry has earmarked nearly 6 billion euros for 350 such combat vehicles. With a unit price of more than 17 million euros, the Puma is the most expensive infantry fighting vehicle in the world.

  4. It is a bit weird that the Bundewehr magazine is saying that atm it is unlcear whether the unit took tools and spare parts to the exercise and if the tanks were maintained beforehand…

which – if true – sounds to me more the commanding officer or someone in the Bundeswehr should get fired for doing a shite job.

The entire thing is weird in general.

  5. Weapon manufacturers are booming and are producing products that are of higher quality than ever before UNLESS it’s the Bundeswehr that ordered these products. At this point, I think the manufacturers are doing it on purpose to fuck with the nation of Germany.

  6. Curious when an actual report will come out.

There’s levels of setbacks, whether its something somewhat easily remedied in future production or if its just entirely fucked.

    From a different article.

“It turns out that there was a bug that the soldiers knew about [apparently kept quiet about], but this bug never happened that often, ie. to affect all infantry fighting vehicles. It is a question of burning a cable in the driver’s compartment of the vehicle, as well as damage to the electronic equipment of particularly high-tech Puma armored vehicles.”

  7. Told you guys for months that German MIC like the Leopard, Puma, Marder are shit. Looks like I was right once agains.

Another 5D Chess move not sending these to Ukraine since they would make Ukraine weaker.

  8. Knowing the Germans my money is that the thing was overly complicated and the army had no spare parts, tools or knowhow on how to use or fix it because of some reason of bureaucracy.

  9. One problem is that, every time the Bundeswehr wants to buy something it has to made an European wide off
Assignment, and when someone didn’t get the assignment he can sue to get it and that has to be decided by a court.

Also another huge problem is that when the Bundeswehr wants to buy any weapons system for example from the US or from an company, their wishes for the functions of that weapons system gets higher and higher which has 2 effects, either for example a new jet is not brought at all because it doesn’t fit in all demands (which sometimes are so high that even the USA cannot produce something that fit in),

Or the end result is an jet (or tank, or rifle) that is so complicated that it is 1. Extreme high maintenance or 2. It gets damaged quite easily.

So quite often the Bundeswehr still relies on way too old tech, in fact so old that they are running out on spare parts
