Boris should be punished. Full stop. If you can think of a single minority group he didn’t piss off, by all means have at. I just think we’re limiting ourselves in terms of the depth of the depravity this government made institutional
I have always wondered why Guardian opinions or other paper opinions are allowed on this sub.
Most of the time they lack nuance, aren’t thought out, and just seem like they aim to provoke people. You could just as well post takes (opinions) from twitter.
Thoughts?
I think, what the europeans dislike the most, That somehow, we have to adapt to the newcomers, but they often show little interest of doing so. Times and times I have heard from people living years in a county and not speaking the language. They say – you have to learn Arabic, Farsi etc. There would be so less problems if they would be willing to integrate more.
There is definitely a line to be drawn between criticism (and yes, even attacks) on the religion itself, which I think should be permissible in a free society, and personal threats/harassment/intimidation of Muslims individually.
I can see many good reasons for the former but none at all for the latter.
People seem stuck on the label “islamophobia”, so change the label. “Muslimphobia” is what the police should get involved with.
I don’t like Boris’ nasty comments about Islam/Muslims.
I also don’t like criminalising people for nasty comments.
> There should also be a specific offence of Islamophobia in the legal landscape.
No. The word itself is Orwellian in the first place. You don’t get to decide what I am allowed to be ‘phobic’ about, to decide what fears are permissible and which are ‘irrational’. Not in a free society.
All sort of criticism on all religious views should be tolerated and encouraged. If god/Allah is so powerful it would surely save its religion.
