‘We’ll build statues of oil protestors’ says Chris Packham

  1. Chris Packham is a fantastic champion of wildlife education and a passionate supporter of the RSPB but kindly stay out of the twatty oil muppets debate!

  2. I dunno about statues. Murals maybe.

The comparisons are really lazy in my opinion, like anyone who protests about anything automatically gets to compare themselves to the Suffragettes.

I think when we do finally move on completely from oil, it’ll be pretty difficult if not impossible to show if JSO actually affected anything, or if it’s just what the politicians and energy companies were going to do anyway. The need to transition has already long since been recognised and in progress, albeit too slowly. Which I don’t think was the case for women’s suffrage.

  3. I do like to hope there will be some protestors at some point in the future, that get the job done!

These very same protestors tried a form of protesting, where they sat outside oil refineries, and even at Parliament and the likes. Unfortunately this from of protesting failed, it didn’t gather much attention.

After, they tried a form of protesting where they targeted the general public and tried to anger them, by blocking roads during times normal every day people were trying to get to work, or targeting works of art to purely gain attention, unfortunately this wasn’t very well thought out, as simply enraging your average member of public, doesn’t actually get anyone any steps closer to forcing those with real power to effect change to actually do anything about it, and it for sure doesn’t encourage support!

I can see the easy mistake, of thinking that because one form of protesting failed, any other will work. And if you don’t think about that sentence for any longer than a few seconds, that does kind of make sense! Unfortunately, in reality, you can just simply have two forms of failed protests!

I don’t know what the next approach should be, but I do hope someone smarter than me comes up with a working one! Although I am slowly starting to wonder just how violent that approach will have to be to really change the status quo.

We will put up statues of the protestors that found an approach to convince the world to act selflessly for future generations perhaps! But it for sure as hell won’t be JSO however, with whatever silly approach this is!

  4. I think that double-barrelled muppet with the soup can will be an iconic image and could see murals or street art of other protestors; but erecting new statues seems staggeringly out of date.

  5. Great plan. If we can get one of the guy neck tied to the goal and one of the lady dumping shit on the statue that would be great.

Putin has done more than anyone to shift away from carbon fuels. Can we get one of him at the bottom of his stairs in a pile of his own shit?

  6. I suspect that’s what the protestors think. A form of grandiosity instead of an objective seems to be a key driving force.

  7. Just Stop Oil are climate Karen’s who are jumping aboard the bandwagon and now they approach the issue with the zeal of a convert. How do I know they’re insincere? Because it’s already too late to prevent global warming catastrophe, they’re not being honest. Also it’s not in need of their brand of protest, policy to switch from oil fuels is already advanced even though it’s too late – 2035 is one milestone. There’s a smell of something off here.

  8. I doubt they give a single shit about having statues.

Doesn’t change the fact they’re the very few that were ok to give up their freedom and be in jail for several months in some cases to ask for basic survival in the future.

The day we, the non-activists and those not on reddit, will have to face karma because we did pretty much jack shit to prepare for it, is coming.

I give all my energy and luck to all the protesters that will radicalize and go for more extreme kind of protests against legitimate ennemies that are too busy to make themselves, their sponsors and their political party happy and rich.

May it all fucking burn as soon as possible.

  9. I don’t think so, but they might be digging up the bodies of the Oil Company bosses who denied climate change for decades Cromwell style in the years to come.

  10. The door on fossil fuels has been closing since the 70s, all JSO etc, have done is glued themselves to it and started screaming.

  11. Need oil to build statues.

    Need oil for basically everything.

If green fascists want to avoid oil, they can live separately and suffer in the miserable existence it would be. But fuck off if you want me to follow you in your self-flagellation.

Zero sympathy for those who try to pervert the liberty and freedom of democracy.

  12. They sacrifice nothing. Fight for the government. To tell us all something we hear daily. Then Demand we live in even more poverty and scarcity. So no we won’t.

  13. You and the oil protesters could probably do with getting over yourselves a little bit Chris. They are not on a par with suffragettes or Mandela et. Al.
