Ireland is the 2nd richest country in Europe

  1. Always find these graphs very interesting.

So either we’re a nation of complainers who don’t realize how lucky we have it

    Or

Look beyond the graphs and we’re far from a “comfortable” country with major issues needing to be urgently addressed.

    It’s an interesting one.

Maybe someone much more intelligent than me could do some analysis.

  2. No chance we’re wealthier on average than Switzerland or Norway

GDP per capita is fairly skewed by amazon, Google, Facebook etc…

Also it says on the bottom right do not download & reupload, reported to police

  3. “By GDP per capita”

That tells you this can be ignored. GDP is a useless measurement for Ireland, I thought this was well-known by now.

  4. GDP per capita is a fake measure of citizen wealth with regard to Ireland, because of its tax haven status for US tech and other internationals. Much of the GDP gets expatriated through transfers and dividends

Median household income is a much better measure.

  5. I don’t think an average Paddy is going to be rich due to Amazon / Facebook etc success

So it is entirely useless statistic

  6. The usual commentary on here but none talking about the discrepancy between productivity growth and wages. Starting salaries vary by industry or profession but we do have averages and then the minimum wage of hospitality workers who are underpaid if they’re not on something substantially higher than the minimum wage (and yes you do have the market paying higher for those in extreme short supply such as chefs – is this impacted by too low number of visas granted for cheffing and the housing situation? – but you don’t hear of waiters and the like being paid equivalently). Of course there is this transfer pricing by the multinationals – the sole industrial policy of all the parties including SF, nobody talks about indigenous industries and putting money into innovation, r&d, and startups – so while the 99/100k per person is perhaps not usable as a linkage for wages we do need to have this conversation, to find out what is the best barometer or linkage to ensure salaries grow in a fair manner.

  7. The CSO publishes a “modified GNI” statistic, which is based on Ireland’s GNI (Gross National Income) with globalisation effects removed. Based on this statistic, Ireland ranks approximately 10th in Europe on GNI per capita – about the same as Germany.

  8. GNI* is the true measure of Ireland’s wealth, the asterisk representing the rectum through which we are vigorously enjoying this fortune

  9. And yet I have €1.25 left on my leap card and €200ish in the bank. A week before Christmas. And we have maybe a weeks worth of oil. At least I don’t live in Estonia!

  10. Mad stuff. I moved from Ireland to Switzerland to work for the same company. More than tripled salary and pay less rent.

  11. Can we please have a tag for infographics like these which says something like “Needs less GDP, More Modified GNI”?

When our own Central Bank has to formulate its own metric (GNI*) because samples based on GDP are so distorted in their representation of wealth, you know the situation is bad.

  12. Everyone else must be doing absolutly amazing, in a year where ive earned more than i ever have over the course of a year before, im still scraping from one paycheck to the next.

  13. The IT hubs that have entered the country (like Apple) over the last 10/15 years are majorly skewing these numbers.

  14. I know most Irish ppl don’t want us to move there and I’ll never be able to afford it anyway, but I’d do just about anything to live in Ireland. I’m queer and have health issues and the thought of living in an even remotely progressive country with cool air and decent healthcare sounds like a fucking dream man. I know it’s not perfect there but there’s no way it’s as bad as Kansas.

Anyway Happy Holidays y’all. Honestly you deserve it.🎄
