Week-in-Review: The Northern Ireland protocol is a Brexit legacy Sunak cannot ignore – Politics.co.uk

  1. I don’t know how many times this has to be repeated, the NIP was negotiated by a British government, ratified in Westminster and the EU parliament. The then British PM boasted about how great a deal it was before turning it on it purely as a means to keep EU bashing alive.

  2. >… so complex is Northern Ireland’s politics, that Sunak must forge political consensus between actors with interests as diverse as the EU, **Northern Ireland’s non-unionist parties**, Northern Ireland’s unionist parties, the Republic, the British government, the European Research Group and probably the United States as well.

This is an interesting point which I haven’t seen expressed much before.

What would Sinn Féin’s response be if the DUP got all they are demanding?

This has never been expressed by Sinn Féin, which is smart politics on their part, in my opinion. Keeps their options open.
