cards on the table i am a twitter bot run by grant schapps and I am programmed to make increasingly misleading claims about how much I make as a train driver and how wonderful I think grant schnapps is for refusing to negotiate. beep boop
As a train driver, I can’t believe the unions are doing this. I became a driver in nineteen diggity two and am well compensated to the tune of £647,000 for my part time job two days a week, where the train guards (that aren’t needed) are tasked with fetching me a fresh coffee at every station.
As someone who definitely isn’t a bot, I ask you to support your Tory ~~overlords~~ politicians and call for an end to this action with a pay cut for me and my colleagues because there isn’t any money any more.
A government with any respect for the country would renationalise the trains and copy the successful models of countless other countries.
The rail is a utility and an enabler of profit in the country, the tory ideal of every journey making a profit for some private company is a cancer on the entire UK.
I don’t care what economic ideals you prescribe to, having working trains that get people to work cheaply is of benefit to absolutely everyone, and the current situation only benefits the friends of Tories who bought up the rail network for pennies.
Recently in Tokyo I was spending £1-4 on train journeys for entire days that would cost £20-£30 here at least, for much better service.
edit: for the sake fairness my specific example of Tokyo is not public rail – but a completely different model to how the tories sold the rail for pennies.
Back to Thatcher we go!
On the plus side, this will very likely not affect any Tory voter in any way while they drive around in their Land Rover right?… right?
Why don’t/can’t they just go on a constant strike until an agreement is reached, instead of just doing loads of 24/48 hour strikes every so many weeks?
Yes it’d fuck the rest of us over far more in the short term, but surely that’d only force an agreement sooner instead of having it drag out this long?
Trains should be abolished, the tracks dug up and we should put roads in their place that allow for cars to go up to 150mph in a special plexiglass dome that’s underground and the cars can all attach to each others bumpers and allow people to walk through each others cars and there should be a car dedicated to providing food and people can get into other peoples cars and sit down if there’s a spare seat provided they have a ticket that they buy from a station before they disembark.
If only there was a way the government could prevent strikes. Like, negotiating with unions or something.
As Ian hislop said, they seem to forget that the unions will say “we want 15% pay rise”, the government say “we can’t afford that, we can only offer 7%” and then you meet somewhere in the middle. That’s how negotiations work, that’s how’s they’ve always worked.
But also adding so many changes and cuts at one time, is going to piss everyone off. Those things can be looked at down the line. One thing at a time, if you will.
It’s not rocket science. But then, this is, without question, the most totally inept government I’ve ever seen.
Usually you get one or two who are semi competent, but this mob are only good at being incompetent.
People who WFH but need to come in a day or so a week cheering at saving money that week
That will now be the second fucking holiday I have to cancel because of train strikes.
Government. force the companies to pay their fucking workers.
This isn’t a complaint, how long can the unions realistically keep this up if the government refuse to negotiate? The fact they’re not even willing to attempt to resolve this says a lot already.
Trains are already bloody expensive so the faster they bring in driverless trains the better.
At the heart of the dispute is a government who think railways should be entirely user funded with no state subsidy. This is based on the belief that the average train user is wealthier than the average tax payer so should be able to self fund the full cost of railways.
Of course this completely misses the point of public transport, disregards any societal benefits of getting people out of cars and let’s those businesses who hugely benefit from our transport infrastructure off the hook.
Merseyrail’s default ticket is the day saver for £5, the system is broken. It cost me £5 to go 3 miles
Right on my 2 office days – awesome I get to WFH. More of this please.
Why am I getting downvoted? Do you like getting ripped off by train companies?
Noooooo you can’t negotiate with strikers, then other industries will demand a fair wage, maintenance of parts and decent working conditions!!! Its not good of you want to grow the economy!!!! How can you make money if the workers are GETTING PAID FAIRLY? Ridiculous, may need to shoot a fox to cool off
They are on strike so much I just think its a daily thing … crying about being on 60k+ a year, cry me a river
I support the Strikers, no matter how evil that Sunak and his ilk want to paint workers demanding more
The sooner they invent driverless trains, the better.
That’ll be my trains to see my sister for her birthday cancelled.
Still, I support them. I’ll just have to hire or buy a car instead and take the financial hit (my booked trains were way cheaper than driving).
railway unions must be destroyed, disintegrated and removed from existence. This is so annoying
The audacity to strike when you earn 60 grand a year, fucking bellends
arent train drivers the most heavily compensated of the whole train sector? why tf are they striking?
