I think its as as good as can be feasibly expected for a country with such low population density. The one exception being advancement into Donegal.
Germany really went wild building train lines there 85 years ago for some reason 👀
Is this just passenger lines? US has loads more lines that are only used for cargo.
I don’t know why we cant move heavey freight via trains straight from Dublin port to various cities in Ireland. We should also have well developed port facilities all over the country and even free up the canals. We got fixated on a car only economy.
Ireland used to have a great train network.
It annoys me that the state let it dwindle away.
Sardinia looks like it has a better rail network than us like what the fuck is wrong with the place
Used to live in Vermont, that random Amtrak we had from our capital to New York was hella handy. Took ages but you could get tipsy, smoke a joint and watch the scenery on the way for like 30 bucks.
Okay Ireland might not be looking great, but I’m **much** more surprised to learn that those are the (passenger) train lines in the US. 😳
Donegal is lava.
Tbf I don’t think many people would be taking the train from Portugal to Belarus. The US is just ridiculously huge and the cost in buying up all that land for extra rail networks just isn’t really worth it for a single country.
For population density (and particularly urbanisation vs. Continental Europe), and lack of ability to connect internationally, it’s not terrible. It definitely could be better.
1000km of rail in Ireland costs the same as 1000km in the mainland. Except in Europe it is usually serving two cities with a population of a million each, as opposed to a few cities of a couple of hundred thousand.
The worst part about Irish rail is that you can’t have a pint on board! Too many anti social drunks ruined it for everyone I imagine.
Also this map doesn’t do justice how bad the US passenger rail system actually is. I happen to live in one of the cities that’s actually connected to this network, but the train only runs through once a week and in the middle of the night, so it’s not practical at all.
All of our dozens of dozens of highly populated cities not even connected by rail. Its a disgrace.
The fact that you can’t get from Limerick to Cork on a direct train is atrocious. Second and third largest cities are not connected.
It’s sickening when you compare the maps of the old train lines in Ireland to the ones today
Our train are a joke in Ireland, especially in Northern Ireland.
Irelands terrible for public transport unless your heading to Dublin
Shape of Ireland. Worse than the US
Ireland sometimes feels more American than European
Ireland has shit public transport, is this the first time you’ve realised this?
Rail in the states is primarily for the movement of freight not people.
To be fair to ROI, there’s only like 5 million of us here so you wouldn’t expect as much volume of rails. But yeah, things can still be improved a lot.
Interestingly Ireland had the world’s first dedicated commuter train travelling from Pearse Street to Dun Laoighaire. Also the most expensive railroad ever built at its time. Built by a guy called William Dargin.
The bridge in Dundrum is also named after William Dargin.
That’s only because they haven’t put the DART in.
Wow Poland’s pretty bare bones as well, but to cut us some slack Ireland is a lot less densely populated then the rest of Europe, still doesn’t excuse the poor transport system that is mainly the fault of the government removing lines and putting more money into roads.
We’re not half the size of France or Spain. Perspective is awful
This has everything to do with population density. However that’s little excuse to no have a lot more in the Northeastern quarter of the US.
Ireland I’m not too sure, how does the density compare to many parts of mainland Europe?
I’d say Ireland has less train lines now than before.
Such a concentrated of trains around the Franco German border brilliant for getting your 1914 era french and German holiday makers to arrive on time.
Sort of looks like the bears skelatal structure
We are no worse than Spain by the looks of things. Yeah!
