Seems like the police should be able to de-escalate and use non-lethal force. Just another copper cunt who reckons he’s an action hero
I’d like to say that it may have been better for everyone involved if it was just a taser that was used, but I wasn’t there and don’t know the situation so I hope that the right decision was made.
There was a policy change brought in during austerity that may have been influential in this.
In order to save time and money, instead of police with firearm certifications having to go to a depot/armoury to pick up their firearms based on the threat of the situation, a lot of firearms officers were allowed/instructed to keep their weapons on them at all times.
In theory this means that responders to terrorist attacks e.t.c would be able to get on scene faster, but in reality it was to save money.
This policy was more widely adopted in rural areas too, as the expense of maintaining a dedicated armoury was seen as wasteful.
I can’t help but think that if a police officer has a gun to hand they are just more likely to use it, rather than waiting for back up or de-escalating
Just as a comparison, last night Leicester police managed to arrest a man after a siege situation using a hostage negotiator, nobody was killed.
You want to play with toys and take things a bit far then there’s consequences if you threaten to harm someone.
When the cops with the big toys turn up then it time to give it up

Let’s leave it to the investigation to find out what really went on. It seems very disproportionate, shooting someone dead who’s brandishing a knife. But it could’ve been the correct decision. Let’s wait and see.
Just reading the headline…what is the police supposed to do? Subdue them with knifes of their own, doing an awesome pirates-of-the-caribbean style parrying ‘sword’ fight?

i dont think the police should shoot to kill – that should not be their call.
So many people have mental issues and if the armed person does not present any danger to others or the police then its not their job to judge and kill.
No one here concerned that the police are shooting people now?
