> it had lost £275m on investments it made in solar energy and other businesses, and has set aside a further £130m this year to pay back investment debts.
Councils really need to stop playing at being investment funds with taxpayers money.
Hurray, more councils are going bankrupt. Can’t wait for the country to be sold off to the massive bidder with able bodied people chosen to do field work (aka farming) and others sold off as pleasure slaves.
Wait, I thought Conservatives were good with money?
The Heath Government pursued and personally surcharged for potential income lost those Clay Cross Councillors who refused to implement Council rent increases mandated by Central Government.
Will the Sunak Government be asking the Tory Councillors to personally pay back the £275,000,000 of public money they frittered away on property and other risky speculations? I wouldn’t hold your breath.
they are going to need a lot of bailiffs to evict all of thurrocks residents when they repossess the town.
Just, why? Why are councils so badly run? Westminster with their stupid hill. People honestly must look at the UK and think what a bunch of dumb fucks
Why is a council even making “investments” in businesses? A council is there to provide services to the public. If it has money like this that is unused then it should be returned to council tax payers.
Whenever I see
>repeatedly ignored warnings from financial experts
I have to think what motive was in place for the person holding the purse strings.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if some or most of the investments were conflicted.
Sounds like they’re caught between Thur-rock and a hard place.

[This was estimated to happen 3 years ago](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.essexlive.news/news/essex-news/thurrock-council-hits-back-after-2929889.amp), quite evident that its been known about for some time now. They couldn’t fix it, even with government intervention
