Fire safety oversight during latter tiger was basically just a myth wasn’t it
The Americans must have known which is why they sold up to the council. The council of course being fully incompetent wouldn’t bother doing a full fire compliance survey.
In the first instance, the council shouldn’t be doing deals to accept social housing in working class areas miles away from the development.
Christ how stupid are the AHB/DCC. Why buy them before you check if they have defects? Yano the same defects countless other apts in the city have. Or maybe it’s cause they know someone else will be paying the bill…..
It’s going to be some scandal when it’s found that all apartments built during the Celtic tiger don’t have any fire safety. We’re one fire away from thousands of properties being deemed inhabitable in the middle of a housing disaster.
In every other country a scandal of this scale would collapse the government, but in Ireland “lessons will be learned” and we’ll vote them in again and again.
I used to live in one of the apartments in that photo. To be fair it was a great place to live, the apartments were well built. I didn’t notice anything majorly wrong with the fire safety – there are fire doors and alarms everywhere. The issue seems to be with fireproofing in the walls between apartments, which is something you’d never pick up on without opening them up
Don’t worry guys, we can trust the government and developers to responsibly build ~~Grenfells~~ high rise apartments!
All in the past. Just like every other time poor regulations and corruption were in the past – until the next scandal.
Unsurprising. In my apartment complex, the wired-in alarms are removed from all of the apartments (leaving the base sockets on the ceiling) due to nuisance activations when making toast I presume, so people have to install their own battery alarms and I bet you most don’t bother or don’t check the batteries.
I feel like building apartments with this level of safety defects should be a crime.
Let developers self certify their work and fire certs, what could go wrong. No need to inspect, the developers wouldn’t pull a fast one. Oh wait.
And all these developers liquidated their companies so there could be no recourse, and just re-branded and carried on. Sure why wouldn’t you when you can get away with it.
Not trying to downplay there this but what were the defects?
I know my parents places got coded since they did not have the safely window stoppers on velux windows that were in the attic roof. So unless you were standing on a step-ladder there is no way of “accidentally” falling out of them, even if you pissed off Russia.
Surprise! Irish construction industry in major balls up!

Hate to be stuck with that username OP.
