  1. If it were me I would have taken cover. Those 2 near the truck were like ‘yeah so there is the train coming towards us at high speed. Hmmm it will bash the truck probably. Let’s see how this plays out’

  2. If Iveco had the time to arrive there, how did they not have the time to call Infrabel to notify them?

Also, is it me, or did the front car jump up with the impact?

  3. Damn … I can feel the helplessness of the bystanders as they lift their arms in disbelief.

Happy the truckdriver didn’t stay in his truck.

  4. I’m always amazed in cases like this where an incapacitated vehicle is stuck on tracks for minutes and a train hits it without having slowed down much… how nobody at least suggests to look at the responsibility of Infrabel, NMBS and partners.

I get that it’s difficult to slow down trains but you’re telling me that in 2022 there are no sensors that can register if it’s safe to pass? There is no way you could show the train driver pictures of the crossings he’s going to pass (snapshots every 30 seconds does not need a crazy amount of bandwidth). Perhaps the perfect solution is not available but the fact that nobody ever seems to suggest and discuss it always baffles me. “But but… the train stops for noone”.

  5. I simply can’t believe none of those people standing around got it into their head to call 112 or any other emergency number so trains on that line could be stopped. the truck must have been standing there for a while, since the repair truck is already there…

It’s like people completely lose any form of common sense in an emergency.

  6. Just take a moment to appreciate the sheer powah of being hit by a train! Now the expression “this hit me like a train” definitely makes sense.

  7. Why do we even need train drivers if they can’t stop for a truck. If a plane can fly on its own a train can do it too. Why not place more sensors and let a computer drive the train. You can still have a control room with people ready to take over if something goes wrong with the sensors. Must be cheaper to operate that way.

  8. I’m a train driver. And I feel that I need to do some sort of AMA on this sub so I help/educate to explain how the railway system works. Because the things I’m reading here are just mind boggling.

  9. English DeepL translation of the RTBF article:

A passenger train collided with a truck stopped at a level crossing on Tuesday shortly before 4 pm in Ardooie (West Flanders). The first two cars derailed, but did not overturn, leaving several people injured.

The accident occurred shortly before 16:00, causing significant material damage, according to the mayor. Several passengers were injured, added the SNCB, without specifying if they were serious or light injuries. Some 80 passengers were evacuated. The train traffic is temporarily interrupted between Deinze and Lichtervelde.

Train traffic will probably not be possible again in Ardooie until next weekend, reported the railway network manager Infrabel at the end of the day.

The damage to the railway infrastructure is enormous. “The damage extends over a distance of 500 meters. Sleepers, signal cables and the catenary, among others, have been damaged. A catenary pole was also hit,” said Infrabel.

An electric cabin that controls the level crossing was also destroyed. Technical teams are on site to repair the damage. Rail traffic is not expected to resume before Monday.

Following the accident, Infrabel is giving instructions to drivers. “There are stickers with an emergency number and all the information on each level crossing. If you get stuck, leave your vehicle as soon as possible and call this number. The emergency services are in direct contact with our control center, which can direct rail traffic elsewhere or stop it. In this way, a collision can be avoided.”

  10. If you put it into 1st gear and then turning up the key, the starter will move the truck! I would expect a truck driver to know some tricks…
