As a result of the tightening of Russia’s LGBT laws, Moscow’s libraries are receiving lists of works by authors that must be put in the scrap bin.
Moscow libraries have received new lists of books that must be taken out of circulation as a result of the tightened law against “LGBTQ propaganda”. Among the works on this list are those by Haruki Murakami, by the British humourist Steven Fry, by the best-selling Irish author John Boyne, by the American Michael Cunningham, by the Russian feminist poet Oksana Vasyakina, but also by the imperialist-minded founder of the National Bolshevik Party Eduard Limonov. Also to be removed are the novel “Possessed” by Antonia Susan Byatt and textbooks in sex education. Previously, books by authors who had been declared “foreign agents” or who had condemned the war in Ukraine, but also those suspected by the authorities of LGBTQ propaganda, had been removed from circulation in the capital’s libraries. However, one could still consult them in the reading room. The titles on the new list could no longer be hidden away in some repository, reports journalist and literary scholar Sergei Lebedenko on his Telegram channel. Their delivery to readers is officially blocked by the electronic system. Instead, the books are supposed to be put into the waste paper, i.e. destroyed. The final decision is made by the library directors, who have to present a certificate of disposal. As a result of the new law, booksellers have also removed LGBTQ bestsellers from their range.
Remember, we have countries in the EU, which have similar ”anti LGBTQ propaganda” laws…
Now comes the standard “where they will burn books” cliche.
Damn, the world is really intimidated by books. Remember when they use to tell us knowledge is power? Guess that went out the window.
This was but a prelude. Where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people as well.
And another mark ticked off in the Nazi playbook…
Well, that’s always such a good sign for a country…
If your population is dumb there easy to rule
I guess the concept of e-books haven’t made it to Russia yet.
I am lost for words.
Knowledge brings fear.
Also … where Russians are going, books are not needed.
The Russian government: Bans books, puts people in jail for disagreeing with the government, bans freedom of speech, has horrid inflation, is under heavy sanctions, doesn’t care about bad living conditions, fights unnecessary wars, kills over 100’000 of its young population.
young, well educated Russians: *leave the country*
