Lots of newish songs on YouTube and Spotify have millions of views, but I never hear them on the radio.

If you release a song that receives no radio attention but has 8 million views on Youtube, would that song be considered a flop or a success? I’m referring to artists who aren’t super famous, but have an internet audience.

Take this song for example. I know people say it’s bad, but I like it. That’s why I’m including it. It has 5 million views on Youtube and almost 30,000 comments, but isn’t popular on the radio (not even in the singer’s country) However, people seem to know this song regardless.

This song is better quality, but the situation is similar.

  1. Sharon van Etten tours, plays festivals and is primarily an album maker. Seventeen isn’t a flop because it didn’t hit no 1 on the pop charts or receive airplay on the radio.

It depends on your definition of a hit.

  2. Thing is, the internet moves so fast, a song can rack up millions of plays on youtube / spotify / tiktok before the dinosaurs on the radio catch on. Artists are still getting money and exposure from these online plays, so no, I wouldn’t consider no radio play a flop. Thats my take on it anyways

  3. A large part of getting airplay is generating streams as most Dj’s are looking at streaming and social media stats.

That’s why lots of artists go mental over streaming. Because the more streams you get the likelier your song will get playlisted online or on Radio.
