  1. > Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger is expected to make the trip. While her ministry has not commented on the plan, Peter Heidt, a parliamentarian belonging to the same pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP), told Nikkei Asia by phone that Stark-Watzinger had personally confirmed it to him.

    >Although Taiwan has in recent years hosted many political delegations from countries with which it has no official diplomatic ties, such as the U.S. and the U.K., they included lawmakers, deputy ministers, ministers of state and local leaders, rather than cabinet members. The most high-profile of these was the visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August, which sparked a furious response from China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.
