> ## Ukraine’s entry into NATO “unlikely”, says Macron

> The French president once again insisted on the need to give “security guarantees” to Ukraine, but also to Russia at the end of the conflict. A position that has already earned him strong criticism.
>
> Emmanuel Macron believes that Ukraine’s entry into Nato would be seen by Russia as a confrontation and that it is not the “most likely scenario”, in an interview with several media. “It is not with this Russia that you can imagine it,” he told the French daily Le Monde, the American Wall Street Journal and the Lebanese An Nahar on Wednesday 21 December.
>
> “Whether or not Ukraine joins Nato – and this is not the most likely scenario – it will have to be given security guarantees that are all the more robust because it has been attacked by Russia,” he continued. Emmanuel Macron insisted on the need to give “security guarantees” to Ukraine but also to Russia at the end of the Ukrainian conflict, a position that has earned him strong criticism in Kiev and Eastern Europe.

> ### “Rethinking our strategic autonomy”

> “In the end, we will have to put everyone around the table. And so all the Europeans and Westerners who give me moral lessons should explain to me with whom they will sit around the table,” he said. “I don’t want the Chinese and the Turks to be the only ones negotiating the day after,” he said, referring to the mediation efforts of Turkish diplomacy.

> The French president also once again pleaded for Europe’s strategic autonomy, within NATO, but with less dependence on the United States. “There is no security architecture for Europe without strategic autonomy, in NATO and with NATO, but not by depending on NATO,” he said. “An alliance is not something I depend on, it is something I choose (…) We must rethink our strategic autonomy,” he insisted. “Europe must gain technological and capability autonomy, including in relation to the United States,” he insisted.
NATO charter does not allow the entry of nations in active conflicts, nor the entry of nations with territorial disputes. It is impossible for Ukraine to join NATO.
If NATO membership and protection is not possible, then future leaders of Ukraine might consider realignment with Russia for its “protection”.
Not a likely narrative now, but actions got consequences, and so does inaction. Somebody should tell Macron he is not serving the interests of NATO, EU or nations sharing a border with Russia.
NATO should join Ukraine instead.
Big brain time.
Coward
To be honest, maybe it’s time to break up NATO. US/UK/Poland/EE including Ukraine can all form a new security pact. Ukraine will need serious security guarantees if it’s ever going to get western companies to Invest in rebuilding the country. Western Europe can have their strategic autonomy on their own.

i think it is the perfect timing to suggest an eu security assurance. a treaty of defense between the eu and its future member ukraine could establish the ground work for a defense policy and a military protectorate status to nations that apply for eu membership.
but it must be a binding treaty.
Yeah, I wonder who Biden was talking about, when he basically said certain European partners are limiting NATOs actions… Pathetic.
Kick France out of NATO before they quit for second time.
Well why would we? It’s a military alliance, not a charity club.
This conflict has shown us why it is GREAT that they are not in NATO. We can fight with Russia all we want, at zero lives lost and zero infrastructure damaged to us.
Now imagine if they would be in NATO. Fighting would have spread, we would have had to send NATO lives to the front to die, the conflict would have escalated etc.
NATO is at the most effective it has ever been at next to zero cost, how could it ever be improved?
Shut up, coward Manu.
And how likely is Macron finally shutting the fuck up?
Ukraine will join NATO, I think it will be in 2024
Ukraine should not be part of nato
Whatever security guarantees are given to Ukraine they should include boots on the ground so that Russia never dares to ever attack Ukraine again.
It’s that time of the month when everyone gets mad at France for saying the obvious
