Men do not understand risks of gender reform, says UN expert

‘Looking at someone’ is violence? ‘Flashing’ someone is violence?

Not that I want to minimise intimidating, or unacceptable behaviour. But it’s not ‘violence’.

    This is literally 1984.

  2. The Transphobic community is demonising all Trans people as sexual predators. And the evidence from other countries that have introduced laws don’t support this fear mongering. And there are “UN Experts” that have very strong support for gender reform so don’t use one UN official as gospel on this.

  3. I’m confused as to how Reem Alsalem can be taken seriously as the UN’s special rapporteur on violence against women if she doesn’t give a shit about an entire category of women (in this case trans women). Imagine if there was someone who had that role who was incredibly open about the fact that they didn’t care about violence towards black women or violence towards lesbians.

If she’s on the side of people who are spreading hatred and bigotry towards one group of vulnerable women who are at a high risk of violence, she’s entirely unsuited to the job.

It would be like making [this bloke](https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/analysis-blairs-eight-years-middle-east-peace-envoy-wasted) the UN’s special envoy for peace in the Middle East!

    > Fulton MacGregor, the SNP MSP, asked Alsalem for “empirical evidence” to support her concerns about the bill, but Alsalem said the politician may not understand the risks because he is a man.

There’s a nasty undercurrent to the bigots and transphobes who try to pretend that the debate over trans rights is somehow trans people versus cis women or cis women versus everyone else.
