  1. What on earth do you do with someone like that? Keeping him in solitary is making him worse, but if you put him in general population he will inevitably hurt someone.

  2. Brendan Cummins (27) Timeline

    * He started committing crimes at the age of 15 and has been in and out of custody for the majority of his life since then.
    * In February 2014, he was given a three-year sentence by a circuit court for assault causing harm.
    * By 2017, he had racked up 18 previous convictions, including 10 previous convictions for assault.
    * In 2017, Cummins attacked the governor of Cloverhill Prison, repeatedly punching him in the face. In court, he was flanked by five prison officers in full riot gear and holding shields. He was sentenced to 3 months with the final two months suspended.
    * In 2018, it was reported that he had 97 disciplinary sanctions from prison and had to appear in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, again flanked by five prison officers wearing riot gear. He was convicted of assaulting a prison guard. The judge imposed a three year prison sentence but suspended the last year after noting Cummins’ young age (23).
    * By 2019, Cummins was out of prison.
    * April 27, 2019 – Cummins committed an unprovoked attack on a man who was out walking in Dundalk. Cummins slashed him in the face with a Stanley knife without warning, cutting the man from his forehead to his lip. Cummins then bent the man over and slashed him to the back.
    * May 10 2019 – Cummins and an acquaintance were drinking late at night with two women in a house. Cummins suddenly knocked the other man to the ground without warning and told the women to video him as he slashed at the victim with a Stanley knife, shouting: “Tell me I’m the surgeon. I’m the daddy.” He slashed the man under his ear before slicing him down his back from the neck to the hips. Cummins told the man: “You’re going to die, you’re going to die”. The victim tried to escape the house but the front door was locked so he ran upstairs and jumped out the window, breaking his leg. He crawled home and was taken to hospital.
    * June 5 2019 – Garda Armed Support Unit broke into Cummins’ home to arrest him. He attacked them with a samurai sword. The first garda in the formation defended himself with his ballistics shield. Cummins slashed away at the shield, causing a dent in it, before he was overpowered by gardai.
    * When in custody, Cummins was placed in solitary confinement in the National Violence Reduction Unit as he was seen as a “person with violent tendencies”
    * August 2020 – He called for a prison officer to bring him toilet roll and instead, when he opened the hatch, Cummins flung boiling water on the prison officer’s face and chest.
    * January 2021 – When Cummins learned another officer present on the day of that attack had given a statement to gardaí, he attacked him. This officer and a third prison officer were both assaulted by Cummins when he lunged at them while in handcuffs, boxing one to the nose. He also threatened to kill one of them.
    * Now, Cummins has virtually no contact with people apart from prison officers wearing riot gear and he has to be accompanied by four to six prison officers when moving anywhere.
    * He pled guilty recently to the 2019 attacks, but has not yet been sentenced.

  3. Dear lord what an article, deserves to be locked in solitary and have the key thrown away. That part about the being the daddy and the surgeon, serious WTF.

  4. I am not often speechless or lost for words… But wow. HOW was this man released to society or not in a mental institute? How?!?!

  5. Some people just can’t be helped/rehabilitated. It’s obvious that he has some pretty serious issues and that solitary is probably the best place for him.

  6. Leave him in there. Zero pity. Whatever he endures is less than what the many people who’s lives he forever damaged are living with.

  7. No. Fuck what solicitor took this case. If I was a prison guard and he’s removed from solitary I’d take a counter case. Everyone’s entitled to be safe in work. His rights are apparently being infringed upon by being in solitary, what about the rights of all staff and other prisoners if he’s not in solitary.

  8. I’m genuinely against solitary confinement as it is a form of torture— and is recognised as such by many international human rights institutions. I do believe our criminal justice system should be reformative and not punitive as most scientific studies support as being most helpful to society.

However I also have zero idea how you’d handle a man this fundamentally dangerous any other way. I guess while it’s an imperfect solution it’s the only one for a minority of truly broken people.

  9. God it’s so hard to not think “why even support this life?” When you read how much of a horrible bastard someone can be.

  10. Man should be flayed. He’s never getting out so the taxpayer foots the bill for him until he’s dead. Great system altogether

  11. I agree 100% with Brendan Cummins lia… err lawyer no prisoner should be treated like this. But a patient should be. No way this guy is saine, he should be certified.

  12. How much is this fucker costing the state?
Multiple guards in riot gear required anytime to move him.
I’m all for rehab but some people are just beyond it.

  13. This man belongs in an asylum not prison. I feel bad for your average criminal who has to be in the same prison as this lunatic

  14. I’m of the opinion that just throwing people in solitary confinement is inhumane.

But upon reading the fact that he’s repeatedly attacked guards and tried to seriously injure them and is already a scumbag I have no sympathy.

  15. “I am denied the right to brutalise people! Compo! Compo! Compo!”

Solution: pay him millions in compo but immediately seize it and divide it among his victims.

  16. Seems justified considering his behavior. Honestly he should never be let out based on his behavior.

  17. *His* treatment is inhumane, but his treatment of others is apparently *not* inhumane.

Honestly, some people just need to be thrown into a fucking bin.

  18. Dr. Ríoghnach O’Leary is a known dope within the field, she has a similar mindset to Jordan Peterson so I’m not surprised if she’s saying keeping him locked up makes him “more violent”.

Forcing two woman to record him slashing someone in the back while screaming he’s going to kill him in a completely unprovoked attack is extreme levels of violence so throwing boiling water at a person of authority is not “more violent”, it’s just a violent person doing violent acts…

He needs to be kept away from people.

  19. Why can’t we kill people like this? Serious question. Zero possibility of rehabilitation and a danger to everyone around him. At what point does the value of someone’s life become so negative to society such that we can justify exterminating it as the best case scenario? When does a human’s life cease to warrant rights and protections?

  20. Slicing someone from hip to face and saying ‘im the daddy’ and leaving the victim with no recourse but to jump out a window is so fucking messed up, fuck this guy let him rot in solitary, I doubt any psycotherapy can fix this fella, he should never be released from prison

  21. Unpopular opinion;

    Let um rot.

POS has been at it since he was a teenager. Had this behavior in juvenile and continued to attack guards on the street.

Fuck um. We have enough problems with housing and travelers we don’t need extra shit heads on the street because “people feel sorry” for an extremely violent person, that consistently choose violence either inside or out.

Fuck all that noise. God damn woke fuckers.

Ironic thing is, anyone calling for better treatment of this man would be saying different if he “attacked their father working the prison system/ or God forbid your mother in the street”.

  22. This man, literally mames, mutilates and/or tries to kill any cellmates or Gardaí. He needs a whole riot squad to escorts him or stop him from killing people. There is a reason why he was in SC

  23. When I read the headline, I thought “3.5 years of solitary crosses the cruel and unusual line” but nah, he’s a cruel and unusual cunt. Should be sedated in a mental unit. That’s a broken animal.

  24. Bullet in the back of the head in the prison basement at 9am. Body into an on-site incinerator 15mins later. Ashes flushed down toilet by close of business.
