I make 30k a year and I would fucking struggle with RENT ALONE being basically two thirds of my wage.

Saw this in a Facebook group and literally all the comments were like “well she looks like she could do with it!”. What gets me is that on the profiles I checked it didn’t exactly look like any of them had been skipping meals.
Absolutely no one deserves the indignity of hunger through poverty.
I do wonder what the intention of the journalist was.
I’m not trying to judge her but showing an image of someone with a 2nd chin saying they have to go hungry is going to portray a certain message.
Does anyone else feel like this is cherry picked for some reason?

– substantially above average number of children
– single parent
All characteristics that are judged as negatives.
I grew up in poverty with two working parents when certain economic problems happened and they had to skip out on food etc for themselves. I doubt this is the average person in need.
How low we have gone and how backwards the UK has been taken now is as scary as it is sad. All off the back of our own selfish nature and greed, largely purveyed by right wing controlled media like the daily mail. We’ve bolstered the wealth of the few and made the people on the bottom suffer terribly. And none of these people will care an ounce. They will declare “she’s on benifits”, “shouldn’t have had children”, “get a better job”.
We’re even doing it for the struggling nurses and workers who are having to strike to earn enough to live.
As much as I blame the poloticians its US (particularly the fat white boomer demographic who are comfortably off) who are the real problem. We’re like a bunch of ignorant hate filled villagers with pitch forks just told who the next witch is. Only the witch finder general is a billionare politician deriding the cost of the poor asking for another bowl of gruel.
I’ve trully lost hope in the country frankly. The un-untied failed kingdom.
Taking a look at the comments regarding poverty/benefits. You can really see how well the media, and the powers at be have successfully demonised people. Having us turn on one another instead of pointing the finger in the correct place. Tv shows such as benefits street, rich House, poor house. All the poverty porn has really done a number on a lot of you.

Even if she is on benefits, she spends it all. Which means she pays tax. She has no savings. She doesn’t hoarde any money in tax avoidance schemes like the billionaire class or corporations who actively avoid paying their share. But yeah let’s continue the myth that poor people are the problem.

Working people in the UK, a first world country, have to choose between feeding themselves and their kids whilst the goverment is run by a billionaire… what a joke.
This is a disgrace. We are one of the wealthiest countries on the planet. No one should be without food, shelter and other basic amenities.
The problem is wealth distribution. There is enough money to provide for all, but it is concentrated in the hands of a small percentage of the population. It is widely believed that 10% of our population hold 50% of the wealth.
Just how much money do the super rich need? How many homes? How many cars? Rolexes? Yachts?
Super wealth is obscene.
Also, to see politicians who claim more in expenses each year than those such as nurses earn is also obscene. It is just a shame that the people of our country are so subjugated that we allow the status quo to prevail.
What is with all of you saying she deserves it for having 4 children!?! Maybe she was in a better financial situation when she had them? We’re all one injury away from being like this – I may be comfortable now but if I lose my ability to work I’ll be fucked and so will many of you
This has been going on since the 80’s as far as I personally know & I guess every decade before that. This is not news more of a story for one of the five daily empathetic requirements they recommend.
On a less cynical note the answer is to move to t’north.
When I was a kid my mum always said she had dinner later when we went to bed. I was younger than 10 and my sister and I always thought it was because she’d be making herself a dinner nicer than ours and didn’t want to share. It’s only now as an adult that I realise she probably wasn’t having a dinner at all
The rent payment is more than double my mortgage. Absolutely mental.
I bet the landlord is using that extra 200 a month to heat their house and keep food in their belly.
We really need some form of regulation on what rent can/should be. It’s criminal that just putting a roof over your head can be a third/ half of your income.
I can’t imagine the stress and anguish this lady must be going through at the moment. Something has to change but beyond lower prices and raise wages I can’t think what it could possibly be.

I’m lonely too so I don’t have anyone to share my complaints with ><
i’m really feeling like there is no hope anymore.

This is happening ALL over the country it’s telling that the BBC are framing this in a way to sound like a strange unique case when this has awful choice has been happening for YEARS to so many in the Country. It’s now getting worse. We have more food banks that McDonalds, when will people finally stop putting up with this?

The big kicker for me is that a lot of people I know are struggling and they work their arse off. At what point do people get sick of working all the hours they get and their reward at the end of it is an empty stomach and cold house?
I’ve been eating one meal a day and sometimes not eating at all. My energy bills alone have gone up 40 pounds a week, money I don’t have. I currently have enough food to last till Tuesday for just my kids and I don’t get paid till after Christmas. They’ve had one present each that cost 40 quid, and to do that I had to but less food. My electric is on emergency and I have no gas and it’s ice cold in my house. I have a compromised immune system that leaves me vulnerable and a simple cold can kill me but I’ve got no choice. I’m suicidal, depressed and have no family or friends. I doubt I’ll be alive by march at this rate and the government don’t give a fuck.
