As a aso psychiatrist I can confirm. Alcohol is costing me my sleep (notice how those nice people seem to have a knack for wanting to get help arround 4 am while piss drunk, instead of sober during working hours?), but it’s costing society bucket loads of money too. An admission on emergencies often means an ambulance ride, sometimes a MUG, time invested by some nurses, an emergency doctor, a lab test, a urine test, an ct scan (if head trauma or general confusion of “unknown” origin), a psychiatrist, a barf bag, cleaning personel… Payed by society. Rinse and repeat the next time, because with these patients there WILL be a next time.
I like my beers and my wine, as cheap as possible, but I’m of the belief that we really need to do something about this. Dedicated liquor stores and higher prices at least. And if it’s up to me judges that can ban alcohol sales to the worst alcoholics.
Facts, als iemand die een volledige maand als logistiek personeel op spoed stond, ik heb meer alcoholische patiënten zien binnenkomen dan echte traumagevallen, waarvan er maar 1 was. Iedere avond kwamen er wel minstens 2 jonge gasten binnen waarvan hun maag moest leeg gepomt worden, en waneer je zelf zo een jonge gast bent en iemand van je eigen leeftijd daar ziet binnenkomen heeft dat wel een impact

Laatst was toch gebleken dat vooral ouderen een alcoholprobleem hebben. Ik had op fb op het krantenartikel gereageerd dat je inderdaad verslaafd bent als je élke dag je alcohol nodig hebt. Je hoeft geen probleemdrinker te zijn om verslaafd te zijn. Man, de shit die ik toen over me heen kreeg… we hebben een serieus maatschappelijk probleem.
Maar cannabis legaliseren zou een verkeerde boodschap sturen naar de maatschappij -_-

But we have a big problem with alcohol, I really wish we could legalize cannabis so adults would have a safe and clean alternative “drunkness”, much better than alcohol (with a vaporizer or through digestive path, never recommand combustion consumption which is toxic).

Puur mentaliteitsprobleem hier in België. “Want een pintje hoort er toch bij he. Want eentje bij het eten kan toch geen kwaad he?”
Het is een groot verborgen probleem. Mensen met problemen, in armoede, in weelde.. ze drinken precies om te vergeten. Snap niet zo goed waarom tabaksreclames een no go zijn, maar alcohol geen probleem is. Ik drink zelf ook wel alcohol, maar kan er niet zo goed meer tegen en beperk het tegenwoordig. Eigenlijk zou het beter zijn om tijdens de week niets meer te drinken.
Soms zie ik collega’s die tijdens de lunch bier of wijn drinken. Snap dat niet, dan ben je ‘s middags niet meer fris.

To me it is quite stunning to wait in line for an alcohol check at 11.30 in the morning, and already seeing people being pulled aside for being too drunk to drive.
My other half often does the actual controls, and in one day, they have to talk away drivers licenses several times. There is a problem indeed
