Defiant teenagers take to icy lake in Darlington despite police warnings

  1. There’s only so many warnings you can put up. We live in a free society, that should include the freedom to risk / cause death to oneself so long as it doesn’t endanger others.

  2. Bad things happen all the time, death is all around us and it cant be totally prevented.

We cant all sit inside living in fear of the dangers around us. Thats no way to live.

  3. There are a lot of words for those teenagers, defiant isn’t one of the ones I’d consider to be near the top of the list.

  4. > one of the youths was dismissive – claiming they responded by saying “well it didn’t happen so what’s your problem”.

    Future Tories no doubt.

  5. I remember someone saying years ago that you cannot legislate for stupidity. As others have said you can only do so much but often innocents have to risk their lives to save the stupid.

  6. Those poor kids who went through the ice would have been absolutely terrified. I really don’t understand how anyone would think risking walking on a frozen stretch of water would be a good idea after learning about what happened to those kids.

This isn’t something to rebel over, it’s a chance to prevent it from happening to anyone else.

  7. Teenagers think they are invincible, it’s nothing new. It would be great if they followed the warnings but teenagers love to defy them because it seems to be the nature of being a teenager.

  8. I was on the train a few years ago. Bloke was sticking his head out the window goofing around for his girlfriend. I said he should not. Another man was killed about two weeks prior doing the exact same thing. I pointed this out and even showed them the article. They treated me like I was a weirdo. Literally saving his life.

People need to be educated. If they still want to do it, sign a waiver, record a goodbye, crack on.

  9. That’s why they need to reopen Youth Centers.

These defiant teenagers could be given ‘Community Service’, till end of Winter. Attending a weekly meeting and helping at feeding programme till end of Winter.
    Currently they bored seeking attention

  10. Well who can blame them. We all know the giddy thrill of walking on thin ice. Who can resist such an incredible treat? All that…slippiness? and the cold. It’s really cold. I assume walking on a lake is as addictive as heroin, because otherwise it’s just dim people risking their lives for literally no advantage or benefit whatsoever.
